Cubasis 3.7.1 Crashes with 34 Iconica tracks

Attached is a project template I created adding all 34 Iconica Sketch instruments as tracks and 4 group tracks and one global track. The problem is that Cubasis 3.7.1 keeps crashing before I have even recorded a single track! This is on an iPad 10th Gen with 64 Gb. CPU shows only a few % used. Is this a bug? What is the maximum number of midi tracks supported by Cubasis?

Hi brian1r,
I took a cheeky look at your file, my iPad Air 4 crashed as soon as it opened, definitely a bug.

Hi @brianlr,

Here comes the feedback from our engineering:

The maximum number of instances differs from device to device. Memory (RAM) is the limiting factor on most devices. Your iPad has 4 GB of RAM, iPad Pro models have more. We cannot know the exact number of Iconica Sketch tracks that can be loaded with 4GB, because this also depends on the other plug-ins used by the Cubasis project, and the state of the operating system (such as other apps in the background). But it’s possible that 34 Iconica Sketch tracks is already above the limit of what your iPad’s memory can fit.

One thing you could try is to load the AU-Version of Iconica Sketch (found in Cubasis’ Audio Units folder) instead of the built-in version. The built-in version has better performance, but its memory requirement counts against the Cubasis app, and iOS has a memory limit per app. If Iconica Sketch is loaded as an AU, its memory is not counted to Cubasis’ memory, which might enable you to load more instances, if the CPU can handle it.

Best,
Lars

@brianlr Hi, i loaded the project with all build in instruments without any problems..
Works on ipad pro 12,9“ M2 16gb ram, 1tb with iOS 18.3.2 and cubasis 3.7.1
I think itˋs limited to your ipad specs..

I just tried it again on my 13” iPad Air M2 with 8Gb Ram and this time it didn’t crash, so it is down to your device rather than a bug.

Hi Lars,
Thanks for the detailed feedback. Could you ask engineering what other factors impact RAM use, does that include the quantity of recorded midi notes and automations, number of Group Tracks, etc. Also is there a way for them to program the software so that it does not crash when the memory limit is reached but rather to send a message to say no more resources can be added?

Hi @brianlr

Unfortunately we are unable to reproduce the crash ourselves.
Please share the crash report with us, via the following steps:

  1. Open Settings.app.
  2. Tap Privacy, then scroll down and tap Analytics.
  3. Tap Analytics Data.

Select the crash report and share it with me via PM.

Thanks!

Lars

Hi @brianlr

Could you ask engineering what other factors impact RAM use, does that include the quantity of recorded midi notes and automations, number of Group Tracks, etc.

The impact of notes, automations and group tracks on RAM is minimal. In general, plugins (instruments and effects) have the largest RAM footprint, but it depends a lot on the plug-in. Some require a negligible amount of memory, some need to load samples into RAM and require a lot.

Best,
Lars
