Is there a reason that tokens require both braces and asperands?

I suppose it’s how the developers have chosen to define a token… Each markup language has its own “grammar”…

Yes, we felt it was important to use two characters that would “never” (a strong word!) legitimately need to be next to each other, so it wouldn’t limit you from typing things you might really need to type, however infrequently. And since we added the context menu for adding tokens, hopefully you rarely find yourself having to type them.
