Custom bracket issue

I’m having a couple of problems problem related to custom brackets. Here’s the first one:

Flute, horn, and piano, and the piano gets an added staff. Looks good so far. But I’d like to bracket the flute and horn together, so I add a custom bracket.

Now the barlines for the extra piano staff are no longer connected to the grand staff. Is this a known issue? Or user error?

I can work around this by redefining the horn to be a woodwind instrument, and then Dorico automatically brackets it with the flute without disrupting the piano barlines. But that leads to another issue, which I’ll get to later. Edit: The second issue was just user error.

The Small ensemble bracketing in Layout Options is not an option?

In practical terms, yes, that works. But I’m interested in whether the behavior I described might be a bug, or if there’s a reason for it working that way.

Got it. I don’t see through the pattern either, but adding a second custom (piano) bracket across the lower 3 systems works also.
