Working on some ancient Viola da Gamba music where eight 64th notes only have three beams instead of four. I can create the look with grace notes at 166% but then the fingerings are also enlarged. Best solution? Some kind of tuplet with the tuplet hidden? Or is there a way to change the number of beams? Thanks.
Yes, a 8:4y
(8 32nds in the space of 4) tuplet should do the trick. As long as you’re sure that the notation is intentional, rather than an accident!
Perfect! Thanks!
What’s the Y represent?
It specifies a 32nd as the base unit of the tuplet. Every tuplet in Dorico is X of something in the space of Y of that thing – and you need to indicate what that “thing” is. You can do this by selecting the duration before invoking the tuplet popover, or you can specify it directly in the popover.
Take a look at this section in the manual, and scroll down to “Tuplet beat units”.
Thanks. I found it. I’ve always just used the numbers and set the note value manually from the keyboard. Didn’t even know about the letters until I looked in the popover PDF. I’ve been on Dorico since the very beginning and still learn new things all the time!
