DAW want sustain,

sustain works with Halion stand alone, but not in the DAW

What exact release of Cubase do you have and on what Operating System. What audio hardware is connected to your computer.

More seriously : I guess that you are using a sustain pedal connected to a keyboard controller (answers to @JuergenP inquiries would be welcomed, though). So, if no sustain messages reach HALion as a VSTi in Cubase, there are usually two culprits in the latter :

  • The Preferences > MIDI > MIDI Filter panel : just in case, be sure that the CC64 (sustain) item is NOT in the Controller list,
  • The Input transformer : if used, any active module in it that could filter incoming CC64 massages or transform them ?

I’ll let beside the settings in your eventual keyboard controller, as everything works as expected with HALion in standalone mode.

EDIT : you can check what is actually happening when receiving incoming MIDI messages by :

  • either using the Monitor column in the Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup panel : it will open a window that will list any incoming MIDI messages,
  • or, more or less the same thing, but at a track level, using the MIDI Monitor plug-in as a MIDI Insert for the involved instrument track.
