Also, burn a CD from the DDP in Wavelab, and play it in iTunes, and see if you don’t hear the same distortion you hear in the Steinberg DDP player, as iTunes and the Steinberg DDP player would probably be using the same playback route on your computer, but you could check that in the Windows volume mixer.
