Dead stroke and playback

Hello everyone,

I am working on a vibraphone piece and would like to do the following:

  • change a note head to “x” to indicate a dead stroke for a specific note.
  • have the “x” note head play a different VST instrument (e.g., the same pitch on a xylophone).
  • end sustain only on that pitch (while other notes continue to sustain).

I thought I would do this with expression maps, but I think that’s only useful for sounds that use key switches, and I am trying to have the x note head play a completely different instrument.

What’s the best way to proceed here?

Thank you!

George

Interesting problem, others will probably have better ideas but for exercise my stab at it is

change a note head to “x” to indicate a dead stroke for a specific note.

Custom playing technique, except that’s more for symbols and text rather than note heads. So I’d just set the note head, and you’re OK because of …

have the “x” note head play a different VST instrument (e.g., the same pitch on a xylophone).

Easy if the same VST, but in this case put it in a different voice and map that voice to the other VST. This solves the problem above as you don’t need a custom playing technique with a different VST

end sustain only on that pitch (while other notes continue to sustain).

Yeah the Expression map will probably handle that part.

Could you use IRV and put the dead notes into a separate voice on the Vibes staff but route them to Xylophone in Play mode? You might have to use Remove Rests quite a bit, but it should get you the look and sound you wanted.
