When I open a MIDI file in Sibelius, it is full of ~C… that probably controls the volume. Generally, the interpretation/notation is a mess.
When I open the same file in Dorico, it looks better, but not perfect (which cannot be expected), but the volume still varies, and I see no “code” for it, like in Sibelius. Is there a way to remove all these codes?
Further, is there some “superior” MIDI decoder that can generate better notation to simplify “clean-up”? There once was a Swedish software on Mac (Peter Bengtsson?) which claimed to be ‘musical’, but I’m not sure it exists today.
MIDI controller data is imported, but you’ll see it in the Key Editor, not in the score itself. There are commands in the Play > Automation submenu to remove that MIDI data.
It’s worth experimenting with the settings in the MIDI import options dialog, and using Edit > Requantize if you find problem areas that would benefit from different settings.
The software that claims to have the best MIDI to notation transcription is found at https://www.notation.com, but I believe it’s Windows-only, and I’m not sure whether it is truly superior to Dorico’s transcription, which I think is market-leading.
