Is there any way to control this? The default placement of staff labels is a little further away from the staff than I’d prefer but I can’t figure out any way to decrease it.
There are settings in Engraving Options > Staff Labels that control the distance between the label and the staff.
You can also adjust the size of the indent in Layout Options (though obvs it will move depending on the length of the labels.)

One thing I’m not sure of is whether there is an option to keep the systemic barline at a constant distance from the margin (at least when labels are short). I’ve seen it vary according to the width of the labels.
If you increase the minimum indent sufficiently, it will keep a fixed distance.
