Default Audio Device - question/suggestion

Hi,

I run Dorico 6 on a fairly new MacBook Pro.

I bring my laptop with me every day and have similar setups at work and at home - mouse, keyboard, external display - and an audio interface.

My audio interfaces are similar, but different models (MOTU M2 and M4)

When I launch Dorico at “the other place” it always chooses to use the Built In speakers. I then have to manually choose the correct audio interface.

I know that Dorico remembers what audio device it used on it’s last session, but is there a way to choose a default device?

GarageBand always recognise both devices and choose the one available. I would love for Dorico to have an option where you could arrange the order of prefered devices - and even exclude certain devices that you DON’T want to use.

Kind regards,

Martin

Yes, there is. In Preferences > Play down at the bottom you can select a default device in Audio Device Setup.

I don’t have a Mac at hand at the moment, but could an aggregate device be the solution for you? If you create an aggregate where both, the M2 and M4 participate, I can imagine that that would work for you. (How to create such aggregate you can easily google on Apple’s website.)

In case of doubt or question, I can help more, please let me know.

To further the original question: is there a way for Dorico to NOT change that selected device to “Internal Speakers” on a Mac when that device is not connected? I use a Bluetooth device to play through my “hi-fi” system. Frequently, I forget to connect to it before starting Dorico and have to scroll through Play preferences to reset it in Dorico once connected.

It would be nice if some sort of warning would come up about the default device not being detected and allow the user to connect before continuing and before Dorico changes to the system default.

I realize this is my problem but not having to always reset the audio device when I have my senior moment would be nice. Surely others have occasionally encountered this …

You see, you don’t want Dorico to change to another device, and then there are people that actually do want this to happen…

But you are right, we need to come up with something to ask the user at start-up.

By the way, in order to change the output assignment you don’t need to go through the User Preferences, simply choose from the Dorico menu Edit > Device Setup.

Have you tried Ulf’s suggestion to create an aggregate device on your Mac? This is actually the proper way to do it, I forgot about that.

Thank you guys!

Creating an aggregate device did the trick for me.

This works great with other software as well. I earlier wrote that Garageband automatically chooses the “best device available” but that wasn’t completely correct. Since I got a new mac last year GarageBand lets me know on startup that “The previous device isn’t available and (other device) will be used instead”. When using an aggregate device this does no longer happen; everything just works.

I must confess my ignorance of Mac sound devices even though I’ve used Mac products for 25 years. I did create an aggregate device and it worked beautifully. Thank you!!!
