Hi Forum;
I started a new project.
In it the default notehead is an open half note, regardless of rhythm value.
In Notehead Sets/Default Noteheads there’s no “noteheadBlack” in the “Default Noteheads.”
I click the “Save as Default” star, then quit Dorico.
I then restart Dorico, start a new project, and the old incorrect half-note notehead (halfnote) is reactivated.
I opened another project I was working on earlier today, and the default notehead is what it should be: noteheadBlack, in the Notehead Sets/Default Noteheads.
I can’t seem to make the “Save as Default” work.
Any help?
A new Dorico file with the notehead error is attached. notehead error.dorico (579.5 KB)
Thanks, (ever the neophyte) Bill
I think the easiest way to get back to normal is:
Library->Library Manager->Notehead sets
Set Compare to: in the upper right area to Factory settings.
Then click the red unequal sign for the Default Noteheads and Apply.
Hi Jesele;
Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry to be a pain, but…unfortunately, that did not solve my problem. After applying your suggestion, the half notehead still appears as the default for any rhythm.
I am NOT a coder, but I used build websites in HTML. I looked at the userlibrary.xml. There’s no “noteheadBlack” in the list.
(see the attached Word doc if it will help.) userLibrary excerpt.pdf (15.4 KB)
So, currently the only solution I have, albeit on the local level only, is to go to Notehead Sets/Default Noteheads and click the “Reset to Factory” and “Save as Default” icons (“Save as Default” actually doesn’t work, as noted).
Final question: what does the red triangle in the upper left of the Notehead Set indicate?
It indicates that you have overridden the default notehead.
Also you didn’t follow my advice. In the Library Manager it should be Notehead sets, not noteheads.
You’re absolutely correct: I selected the wrong option (Noteheads instead of Notehead Sets).
I just followed your steps exactly this time:
Applying your changes but before clicking “Apply”:
If you’re as tired of dealing with this error as I am, I’d completely understand: you’ve certainly put enough time/effort into this.
I’ll just continue to correct the problem locally until a miracle happens.
Thanks, Bill
It seems that you also changed NoteHeadHalf so try to reset that also, this time under noteheads. And maybe firstly remove if you clicked the star in Library-> Notehead sets->Default Noteheads.
I tried your suggestion. If I did it correctly, nothing changed. The notehead error persisted.
I tried another test comparing files without restarting Dorico.
Untitled Project 2:
I “Reset to Factory” the Notehead sets/Default Noteheads. The noteheadBlack became available.
Untitled Project 3:
Without restarting Dorico, I started a new project. The notehead error remained in this new project, missing noteheadBlack, although the Project 2 was still correct.
You certainly put enough thought into this problem. I can’t thank you enough.
Read Chrisian’s post: it seems he solved it using your suggestions. I can only assume that I’m still making some error in following your suggestions. I’m going to go over things again after a break. I’ve only been using Dorico for 3 months, so I’m sure I am not doing something correctly.
Again, many thanks for your efforts.
Bill
That’s very strange.
Would you be able to document for me the exact steps you took which solved the problem? I’ve tried to follow Jesper’s steps, but nothing has worked so far, as you can see from the thread.
Let me know,
Thanks, Bill
Bill, I suspect you have managed to save an override into your user library. Please do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the resulting zip file here, and I’ll correct the problem for you and send you a file back together with instructions for where to put it.
Hi Daniel;
Thanks for looking at this problem.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) I’ve managed to correct it.
I implemented Jesper’s solution for the 4th time in a new project. His steps always solved the notehead error but would not “save as default.”
After, or maybe before (I can’t be sure) doing his steps again, I unchecked the bottom left “Save as Default” star icon. I started a new project without restarting Dorico, and the notehead error was fixed in that new project.
(The following is the sequence I’m not sure about.)
After checking and/or (again. I can’t remember) unchecking the “Save as Default” I restarted Dorico, and the notehead error was gone.
FYI: At the onset of this problem I looked into the <userlibrary.xml> file while the error persisted and noticed that in the <noteheadSetDefinitions/noteheads> that the “noteheadBlack” entry was missing. That’s the notehead that’s been missing through this error’s history. That sequence of notes began with “notehead.noteheadHalf” which is the incorrect notehead which kept appearing. The “notehead.noteheadBlack” entry was not there.
After the “fix” noted above, I opened the <userlibrary.xml> again and “noteheadBlack” now appears in <noteheadSetDefinitions/noteheads/notehead.noteheadBlack>.
I not a coder, and have been using Dorico for only 3 months, but I do know a little HTML, so looking at that userlibrary seemed to be a hint that Dorico was not saving the notehead correction to the userlibrary.xml. file. Also, it’s modified date had not changed in the 2 days since the error started: another hint.
Finally, I still have the red triangles in the Default Notehead Set, which means (I think) I edited them somehow, but I’m loathe to try to reset them to factory defaults at this point.
Again: thanks for your current and previous extremely helpful information.
This Forum is unbelievably helpful, and I’m sure you and it will hear from me often in the near future as I navigate Dorico’s esoterica.
Thanks, Bill
[Here’s the Diagnostics file you asked for. It is from today (i.e., no notehead error), but please don’t spend any more time than you already have on this now solved problem.] Dorico Diagnostics.zip (2.0 MB)
Hi Jesper;
Please see my reply to Daniel’s entry. It seems your solution was indeed accurate, I just didn’t know how to use the “Save as Default” star correctly.
Thanks again for you persistence in trying to help a Dorico neophyte.
Bill
De nada, glad you got it sorted.
Be very careful with editing noteheads. (as you now know)
Always create a copy of the notehead/notehead set, and change that and not the original.
Al contrario, fue más que nada.
In all honesty, I don’t think I ever edited a notehead, at least not intentionally. I’ll certainly be careful in all future “edits” to anything.
Bill
I did my fair share of errors with noteheads. It’s perhaps the part where it’s most important to follow the manual. There should be some threads about it here too.
Thanks for uploading your diagnostics, Bill. If you know you don’t want to save any of the modifications you may have inadvertently made to notehead sets, you can replace the userlibrary.xml file you have in your user-level application data folder with the one in the attached zip file:
First, quit Dorico. Unzip this and replace the userlibrary.xml file in /Users/wmbrinkwork/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5 with this one. Restart Dorico, and you should find that you see no further notehead overrides in newly-created projects thereafter.
Thanks much Daniel.
Will this change all the chord definitions I edited?
I notice there’s no in your file. Is that because I had been editing my Notehead Sets?
Just curious before I use your xml file.
Again, million thanks.
Bill
