Hi all, Dorico newbie here…
In my choir score (SATB, four staves) that I am working on, the Dorico default is to position accents below upstem notes. (I thought they should always go above notes in choir music, so as not to tangle with lyrics?) I am aware that it’s good to try to understand Dorico’s default before changing it, so I thought I would ask here about the possible reasons for the default, before I go changing anything. Or perhaps the old convention about positioning choir articulations has changed and I didn’t notice?!
Thanks, and I’m enjoying learning Dorico ![]()

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Dorico automatically treats vocal staves differently from other instruments in this regard – unlike dynamics, which are set above the staff on vocal scores.
Obviously, you can set the Engraving Options to above the staff for every type of articulation, though that will affect other instruments too.
In a mixed score, you would have to change the properties for those artics that fall below the staff. The Properties are “Note-side” and “stem-side”, so you can’t just select everything and set it above the staff.
Gould has this to say:
Thanks, benwiggy! I have my fingers crossed that a future update might allow us to switch on “articulations above” for selected staves, such as vocal staves.
Thanks also for the Gould reference!
Cheers,
