Defective .json files in the splash screen prevent Dorico 5 from starting for the first time

Good day,
(Since there has been no response from support since Monday, I’ll try here. Note: this is a translation of my German ticket to Steinberg).

I have installed Dorico 5 for the first time. Due to problems with the downloader (which does not work properly and also does not offer a user-defined installation folder) via the manual variant (i.e. download via Steinberg Download Assistant and then opening the files).

Now my problem is that when I start Dorico I get the error message: “Error opening file: invalid file format”. There are 4 files specified:

E:/Programme/Büro/Dorico 5 Pro/fonts/metadata/glyphnames.json
E:/Programme/Büro/Dorico 5 Pro/fonts/metadata/glyphnames.json
E:/Programme/Büro/Dorico 5 Pro/fonts/metadata/ranges.json
E:/Programme/Büro/Dorico 5 Pro/fonts/metadata/ranges.json

The program then closes. I have reinstalled Dorico, reloaded the downloader with new installation files and run the installation again, but the problem keeps recurring.

In the folder E:\Program Files\Office\Dorico 5 Pro\fonts there are a total of 29 files, in the subfolder metadata there are 13 files. Following a forum suggestion, I also looked in the folder “%COMMONPROGRAMFILES%/SMuFL/Fonts/”, there are 21 font folders, in each folder there is a single .json file, but none with glyphnames or ranges

I don’t know if this has any effect, that Finale 2014 and Finale v27 is installed. What can I do to get more from Dorico as only the splashscreen? A Crash-Report isn’t possible to create, as Doricos UI never start after clicking OK on the error-message.

I add both screenshots of the programfolder with the errormessage.

Hi, sorry to hear about your trouble.
I have attached a zip of my fonts folder, you could exchange and see if that makes any difference.
Dorico related crash dumps shall usually go to your Documents folder and in there to the subfolder Steinberg/CrashDumps
Is there anything to be found with you. If so, please zip it up and post here.
Furthermore, your Dorico installation is not in the standard location, have you moved it by hand to that location or via the installer? It should not make any difference, I have tried just myself and copied Dorico to an external drive and it starts just fine from that location as well. Still, have you tried installing to the default location?
fonts.zip (2.3 MB)

And also please zip up the folders

%appdata%/Steinberg/Dorico 5
%appdata%/Steinberg/Dorico 5 AudioEngine_64

and post here. Thanks

Hi, thanks for your reply. I didnt know the both log-directories. Both paths are zipped in the attachment together.
Supportfiles appdate-Roaming-Steinberg.zip (110,3 KB)

I will try to get your fonts into my fonts-folder, but the files are in-used (as windows stated) and cannot be overwritten in this time. I try this later. The “metadate”-subfolder i could include. But problem is still there.

No, my Dorico-Installation is - as all programs - within my second drive on E:, as my SSD on C: haven’t enough space for all the gigabytes for dorico. I installed dorico and all of its application on E: as the installer let me do this. I didnt move any folder manually. Its a shame, that not all steinberg-stuff had the power to install into a different path and that i had to start the setup for dorico outside the Steinberg-Download-Assistant.
For your question to try it on C: if Dorico with its 0,6 GB would start, i could try it. But on the first try, there is the need of several gigs for HALion, Sonic and other VST, without installing this, it isnt possible to start dorico, too.

I don’t think later will make a difference – Windows loads the fonts at startup. You could try uninstalling the fonts, replacing with the ones from Ulf, and then reinstalling. You’d want to be careful to use an installation method that leaves the files in place instead of copying them to the Windows fonts folder.

Yeah, i think the fonts itselfs isnt the problem, but Dorico says, that the JSON-Files are defective or missing, but they are there and with editor i can read them. The json-Files within subfolder metadata i have replaced with the ones from Ulf, but the error exists.

Thanks for the log data @Quedel , looking at both of them, the ones from Dorico and the audio engine, it is running quite well except for those json-files, but I have also no idea why or what is wrong with them. Maybe @dspreadbury can say something about them.

If you don’t need the playback, then indeed just the Dorico installer does suffice, you don’t need more to run it. Some warning messages will come for the playback components and sound files, but they can be simply ignored.

And the heavy sound library files for Iconica, HSO and so on, can be easily moved around from drive to drive by help of the Steinberg Library Manager.

Hello Ulf, thanks for your reply. I would be happy to get Dorico working first. To get sounds or playback is a question of far away.
How long does it need, that a ticket (not forum) will be investigated? My is still opened without replay since 6. January.
Greetings from the snow of Mid-Germany.

Hello to all,
Thanks @Ulf, with his help we were able to get Dorico up and running. The problem was apparently the German umlaut “ü” in the file path. It is not clear why only these two files did not work. By reinstalling on the default path on c: and afterwards copying the program folder to a path without the umlaut, we were able to get Dorico to start.

I will try to delete the original folder on C: to refree my space. But on now it is blocked from deleting or renaming (i assume for the fonts cached within windows). So it could be, that some files have to remain on C, but this comes clearer on another day.

Have a nice winter evening!
Quedel
