Desktop and mixer view

I prefer to have my mixer on the right of the sequencing window, and now in v13 they are 2 independent windows. Is there an option to go back to the v12 and previous, and I hate seeing my desktop.

Thanks.

Kevin

To be honest, I don’t remember how it worked in C12, but have you tried using Wokspaces for this?

Never really used them, but I fiddled with it and no luck. Maybe I’m missing something?

Workspaces are great, particularly with multiple monitors.

I’m not really sure what you’re saying though - does “mixer” mean “mix console” and does “sequencing window” mean the editor section of the project window? Screenshots?

Yes precisely. I usually have my editing window on the left, and the mix console on the right on the same 32" monitor. I can send pics when I’m in the studio. Again, I’d also like to not see the desktop… is that possible?

The project window and mix console window are treated as two separate windows, but yes, a Workspace snapshot after aligning them the way you want them should snap them back to where they were if you move them around. I’m having a hard time envisioning the Mix Console and Project Window on the same screen like that, but that’s the point of the Workspace manager.

That should do what you want.

I’ll try that. Thanks. I just went from 12 to 13, and hate the look. Especially the faders. Gonna take a long time to get used to.

Yeah, it’s a change, but I like it - but I’m not coming from years of using Nuendo, so…

I like that I can now add inserts/sends/etc to the Project Editor Mix Console with granular control of what elements I want shown there. That way I can pick and choose what I want to see in what context, so I think it may be worth “resetting” your brain and seeing if there is an opportunity for looking at it a different way with the new options.

If you’re on a Mac, the multiple Desktop feature is wonderful once you train yourself to you is. Simple gestures swap between full-screen and/or multiple window arrangement and is fantastic. Windows has something similar, but it was clunky for me the last time I used it, but Win11 may be better. Anyway, I think you have options, so that’s good.

Not possible unfortunately. How it works is different and IMO it’s not for the better. You’ll rally just have to try and expand the windows so it covers the desktop but there’s no “parent” window things sit in anymore unfortunately. Not sure why Steinberg’s apps seem to behave differently to every other program out there.

Good luck getting used to the look too. That took a step backwards with v13+ for sure.

I’m just realizing that the old way is impossible. Terrible design.

It is indeed possible to place a mixconsole to the right and the project view on the left, and to use Workspaces to recall that view. Whether or not the design is terrible is surely a subjective opinion – but you can still have the elements where you want them.

The old window system where all program windows are inside a container has been gone for along time, what, maybe ten years?

Here is V12 and v13. You could most definitely have the windows in the same container.

Possibly just semantics, @Uplift_Productions, but what you miss in the newer versions is the option to create a background for the Cubase application. That was a transitional feature I suppose, made after the change away from the pre-Cubase 8 Windows 7 (and earlier) style window management method.

Windows 10 and 11 allow the user to set backgrounds for different desktops though like this:

Maybe that can accommodate your desire to have a neutral background behind Cubase windows.

Not sure I understand. I can create the same layout in N14 as you have:

I wasn’t criticizing having them both on the same screen, I just couldn’t visualize it - I have multiple monitors/desktops that I use extensively because I like a different view.

But yeah, you can do the same thing…

yeah but that’s not within one window. I prefer that. Sorry if there was confusion.

Read above? I edited my post

Yeah, I could have one just for that. I appreciate the idea!

This changed between v12 and v13. v12 had a “Window Zero” or floating menu bar which everything lived within if you wanted. You could expand that to include a background. There was an older version where windowing changed and it never behaved as a typical Windows application should after that point.
