Did Cubase 14 remove the ability to create midi clips with the range selection tool?

hi everyone,

In previosu cubase versions (cubase 13 for example), i could use the range selection tool to highlight an area, double click it, and a midi clip would be created instantly.

now, in cubase 14, this no longer works for me. highlighting an area with the range selection tool and double-clicking doesn’t create a midi clip anymore. the only way i’ve found to do it now is by using the draw tool, which feels like an unnecessary extra step compared to how it worked before.

was this functionality intentionally removed in cubase 14, or is this a bug in my setup?

Doesn’t work in 13 either here. As soon as a range is created the hand icon appears when you hover and double click will only reset the range.
Works with locators as it always did…could you be confusing the two?

As far as I can tell, the behavior hasn’t changed – at least for me it works the same in Cubase 13. Maybe you need to adapt a preference. A double-click with the selection tool creates a MIDI part between the two locators. There is an option “cycle follows selection” (or the like) which changes the locators to start and end of the range selection. So, if it’s enabled, a double click on the selection then creates a MIDI part on the highlighted area.

Alternatively, you can also draw a midi part with the selection tool by holding down Alt/Opt.

Thanks, guys, for your help. (And thanks, Martin, for the draw MIDI trick using Alt/Option… that’s a nice trick… btw I have the same preferences settings in both C13 AND C14 and that “cycle follows selection” is already enabled for both versions. Im still unable though to craete a MIDI by double clicking the highlighted area as you can see in the video I attached below)

However, going back to the initial issue, I’m still not sure what’s wrong. I’ve double-checked the settings, but I still can’t get it to work in Cubase 14.

Here’s a video snippet where I demonstrate the problem: in Cubase 13, it works perfectly, you can see me highlighting an area and double clicking with the left mouse button to create a MIDI region. But in Cubase 14, it doesn’t work, which is what urged me to start this thread intiailly

OK…with cycle follows range it does behave as you say…double click works in C13, not in C14 if you still have range tool selected.
Unless there’s another dependent preference we’re missing it may be a bug.

Ah ok, with only the range selection tool activated it doesn’t work in Cubase 14. That might indeed be a bug. I always use the combined selection tools. In the lower half of the selected range, the object selection tool is active and a double-click creates a part there.
