I’m about to throw a fit, so I post this and see what comes up. Tried to find a solution, but came up empty. I have two clarinets on two staves and when I condense I noticed that the first 8 bars hade different stem directions one up, one down and the next part 8 bars later which is exactly the same (copy/paste) have one stem, two noteheads. Tried to copy/past both ways. but the first bars condense up/down and the next on one stem regardless of which bars I copy. It it an IDENTICAL melody. Exactly the same notes. Why??
Never had problems with Dorico before. Have the latest version.
Dorico calculates condensing phrase by phrase, where a phrase is set off by rests on both sides. Measures 5-20 are one phrase in the clarinets, since it’s not until the end of m. 20 that there are rests in both parts. Since mm. 13-20 require separate stems, the whole phrase starting at m. 5 uses them. Bar 21 starts a new phrase, which can be written with single stems.
To see what’s going on, try deleting the first note in Clar 1 in bar 13. The rest on the downbeat in both clarinets turns mm. 5-12 into its own phrase, which can now use single stems.
Edit: As @Janus points out, you can add a condensing change at bar 13 to force Dorico to consider those bars separately from 5-12.
To amplify @asherber’s comment. Just force Dorico to start a new phrase for the clarinets at bar 13 by adding a condensing change (which doesn’t change any condensing settings)…
Condensing phrases is a concept you need to grasp to get expectable results from condensing. It’s really important to understand how Dorico thinks so you can input condensing changes where you need them.
Thank you all. I will look at it again with your suggestions in mind. Been using Dorico since it was released, and there are new things to learn still .
EDIT: Deleted the players, added them again, put the music back manually. Bob’s my uncle. I honestly can’t understand why I had this problem the first time. Still, I’m gratful for the support on this forum. You guys are great!
