Different dynamics (pp, ff) don't result in different velocities

Using Dorico for making midi-files. Instrument: piano. If I place FFFF in the first bar and PPPP in the second bar I expect to see very different velocity values in the midi-file (e.g 100 and 30). When looking in the playing techniques I see the graph “dynamics” going from ffff to pppp (as expected). I tried something with expression maps (default), but nothing changes. I am sure I am making mistakes, as I changed to Dorico only a few weeks ago. Can you help me

It will depend on whether the Expression map you’re using for the instrument is set to send dynamics as Note Velocity, or as CC1 (or something else!).

Ideally, if you can supply a document that shows the problem, that would help to find the fault.

Thanks for your reply.

Sicilienne (short testversion).dorico (654,9 KB)

The first file hypnosis has problems , the velocity doesn’t change as expected (for the test I have added a lot of dynamic signs). This project was made by importing a XML-file, but as far as I have found XML gives information om pp, ff and so on only and not on velocities.

The second file (sicilienne) was made with Dorico only. I have added some dynamic signs for testing. That works 100%.

I wonder why Hypnosis is not acting in the same manner as Sicilienne.

As stated before I use Dorico to make a good midi file. Reaper is my DAW and I have VSL libraries. As almost VSL instruments have several velocity-layers I use velocity only (and not CC11 or another CC to control the volume of the sound).

I hope some-one can find a solution for my problem (expression maps are new for me). My old notation program was able to make a midi-file and ther were no choices (as velocity, velocity+CC11 and so on).

Many thanks in advance from a Dutch amateur

All the notes in your “hypnosis” score have overridden, fixed velocities. Use Edit > Select All, then Edit > Filter > Notes and Rests. Now in the Properties panel you should see the Notes and Rests group of properties. If you don’t, do Edit > Filter > Deselect Only followed by Edit > Filter > Tuplets, and then you should see those properties.

Deactivate the slide switch next to Velocity in the Notes and Rests section, and you will then find that your written dynamics take effect as expected.

Thank you very much for the crash course advanced Dorico for beginners. Without your help I had never found the solution. It works as expected. My velocities depend on the dynamic signs. I will study the manual concerning the property panel. There are overwhelming choices and it will take some time to understand. Many thanks.
