Difficulty with Templates not saving where intended

Despite what the forums and manuals suggest, I seem to be having great difficulty having my templates saving all required information. Page size keeps reverting back to A4 from Letter, margins return to standard, frame sizes and locations do not save. Is there some special procedure to ensure that everything is applied before the template is saved/cereated?

We’ll need a bit more info to come up with helpful answers. First of all: are you referring to Page Templates or Project Templates? (Layout options get saved with Project Templates, not with Page Templates). Second: what is your current procedure? What steps do you take to save your template?

Hi Zelda, As far as I know, I have only created Project Templates, but in those Project Templates I have already set up a page layout (location and size of title frames, music frames, etc.) which now seems to carry through as intended. However, I have my template Project settings with 8.5” x 11” Paper (North American Letter size), but invariably when I go to export the page to PDF, page size is shown as A4 (European). I open Layout window, choose paper size as Letter, Apply, Save as default. Close, but the paper size in Print window still shows as A4, but appears to display Letter aspect ratio. I must be doing something wrong. I only use Letter paper (except for symphonic scores), so how do I get all Part paper sizes to default to Letter and save that as part of my Project Template?

For starters, if the automatic settings are not working, I’d set your preferences…

HI Janus, I set those first thing, North American and Inches. I just opened Dorico and confirmed it is still set at those settings

Well, being in Europe, all American peculiarities are a complete mystery to me! Sorry I can’t help further.

I see that. The thing that is concerning is that, despite being disabled, the preview in the window displays on A4 aspect ratio, and I have to go into layout options and re-select Letter. I thought the main Preference settings would apply here, but it does not seem to.

PDF represents pages as a ratio of height and width, not as any specific size. So if the layout size is set, the page size listed on the Print screen is irrelevant.

You said above that the preview was showing in Letter aspect ratio (which is what I would expect) even though the disabled dropdown says A4. So which aspect ratio is showing? It should show whatever is set in Layout Options.

Also, do you have any actual printers installed on your computer? There is an issue with Dorico displaying the wrong aspect ratio in Graphics export if there are no printers installed.

I don’t believe this is true. AFAIK, PDFs encode the absolute size of a page in points.

But if one prints a PDF on different size paper, PDF retains the relative height vs. width to print the image in perspective.

Yes, but it does that by scaling the specified absolute size.
