Hello All,
So I keep putting in Tempo texts as directions, and every time I do it seems to insist the tempo shift to the default (q=72) regardless of what I do. I never wanted a metronome shift in the first place. Any thoughts?
Hello All,
So I keep putting in Tempo texts as directions, and every time I do it seems to insist the tempo shift to the default (q=72) regardless of what I do. I never wanted a metronome shift in the first place. Any thoughts?
Can you tell us a bit more about what you’re doing? Starting with SHIFT+T and then…?
Yes, Shift T and then just typing it in. And no matter what it’s q = 72.
I think what you’re seeing is simply the generic icon Dorico uses for indicating that it’s the Tempo Popover. Start typing in “Al…,” for instance, and you should see a list of selectable actual indications. Of course, you can just completely type your own.
Here’s a helpful resource:
I’m not sure what problem you are seeing (the default tempo setting for Dorico is q=120 for any tempo text indication it does not understand), but perhaps you are in fixed tempo mode?
To quote the manual: “In fixed tempo mode, the tempo for playback and recording is a single tempo, as determined by the Fixed Tempo Mode metronome mark value.”
I put in the word “terse” and it insisted on q=72. Tempo changed in playback too.
Try “Terse(ly) q=X” (assuming a quarter note (“q”) as the beat value; with “X” as your BMP, obviously).
To build off of what @Janus posted, “Terse” is not a tempo term that’s pre-loaded into Dorico, so it won’t be recognized on its own. Dorico already has many, such as the obvious Allegro, Lento, et al., but you can create anything that you wish (with correct playback if you also have the [note value] = X “equation” after it).
I get q=72 for words like terse as well. When I write the word “fast” I get 72 and when I write the word “slow” I get 120. It’s interesting but not a big deal.
As stated above just write in the metronome speed you want and then you can hide the metronome mark (of your choosing) in the lower panel if you just want the direction “terse”.
One can, of course, change the MM marking for any tempo in the Properties Panel.
A tempo mark has to have some tempo value, even if it’s not displayed.
It’s not currently possible to type in an MM value in the popover and not display it; but it’s easy enough to hide it in the Properties panel afterwards.

Actually you can (if you put it in ()s), but only if you don’t add a text qualifier as tell.
What about using system text if you just want the text, not a change in tempo?
System text seems to work.
Does play hell with the playback!
