Disabling Midi input

Hi, newby here (30 years Finale…)

Excited to be in Dorico world!

A question, I never use my keyboard controller to input notes, I use a tablet and numpad. I want to retain midi thru without it inputting notes and I have tried all combinations of midi input and midi thru in the play preferences but no luck. I don’t want to use ‘press K’ as I am obviously missing something.
I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas. I have read through all relevant topics but everyone seems to use midi keyboard input!

Thanks in advance

Hello, I hope I’m not missing something about pressing k, but yeah the midi settings are meant to be configuration settings that you don’t change a lot. You aren’t missing anything there.

One answer is to un-select whatever stave(s) you are on inside Dorico - in which case the midi won’t be routed to a Dorico instrument, You can mute Dorico/pull the master fader down or probably other ways, but deselecting ensures you aren’t accidentally entering/ overwriting something.

I’m assuming you mean , you have midi being sent from the tablet that you want in both Dorico and elsewhere? If you NEVER use the midi keyboard, you could disable that entirely in Dorico without affecting any other app that needs it.

Hi, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I don’t want to deselect the stave as I am inputting notes with my pen/tablet. In Finale you just deselect ‘midi input’ and you’re done, and can still use midi thru.

When I say I never use the midi keyboard, it’s just not for inputting notes, I need midi thru to test harmonies etc.

Ok, so if it is the case that you have a daw or standalone instance of VST that you want to hear, then just disable the keyboard in Dorico.

But if you mean that you want to audition in Dorico using the keyboard , then use the tablet or numpad to enter the note - then you are looking I think for “pitch before duration” mode. In that mode, you can Play around, end with the note you want and then press the duration to have Dorico input the last played note (or chord if you are also in chord mode) It is less clicks working that way, but you could also play around, then type the pitch you want on the tablet and then the duration to enter the note.

There isn’t a mode or concept of routing a keyboard to a staff permanently or anything like that, it goes to the selected stave.

Thank you, I’ll play around with your suggestions! It’s weird having to learn a whole new system…

I get it - I made a decision somewhat recently to get past some keyboarding “skills” I’ve hung onto since college, which were no doubt as interesting to observe as my “dancing”. So yup, this composer went back to the very beginning, no skipping anything book 1 piano lessons, killing those nursery rhymes and proud of it. Really enjoying it too, speeding where I can, grinding with dedication, humbled and reminded “unless we become as a child…”
