Is there any way to change the font or text size in the display area (numbers in the cursor info bar at the bottom of the edit window for instance)? Even with my glasses on these numbers are very difficult to read against the grey backround.

Not possible. Are you using standard Windows color scheme (or OSX)?
Win 7 with a modified diplay profile. I have selected bold fonts for menu’s etc, but it doesn’t reflect in the little status displays.
