Display custom text in all parts but not on the score

in Dorico 6 Pro, is there a way to edit a custom paragraph style to display a system text on all parts but not on the score ? (apart from setting the font size for the score to 0)

A specific paragraph style is not needed.

  • Create the System Text in the score.
  • Open the lower zone (CTRL/CMD8) .
  • Make sure that Set local properties is set to Locally.

Thank you @Vadian This works very well for hiding a single text element.
However, I have several text elements with the same custom type in a project.
I’m looking for a way to hide them all globally in the score, without having to hide them one by one.

There is no easy way to do that. You could select one System Text and then Select More by pressing SHIFT CTRL/CMDA, then you can hide all selected items at once. On the other hand this will select all occurrences of System Text.

OK. So I’ll go back to my first solution, which was:
in “paragraph styles”, give this custom text style a font size of 0 for the score.

I find that a font size of 0 pts – even 0 pts staff relative, which should make it somehow smaller – doesn’t quite make text disappear.

I use this solution for my projects with A4 paper and only 4 staves per system, it works well, nothing is visible.
Perhaps it doesn’t work for larger formats.
Note: these letters are not rehearsal marks.

Letters to the left of the systems on parts:

No letters on the score:

If the text items in question already have the same paragraph style that is not used by items that don’t have to be hidden (and from the OP I gather this is probably the case), using Select More actually is quite easy because of this behavior:

(link to manual)

So select one of those items, hit Select More, and then hide locally in the Properties. Just make sure that paragraph style is not used by items that have to remain visible in the score. Using font sizes/colors/opacity never completely eliminates the risk of an item unexpectedly showing up in a pdf somewhere. Just my 2 cents.

I was hoping for a method to automatically insert custom-styled text, visible only in Parts and not in Score, without having to edit it afterward.
It was extremely simple in Finale; May I suggest an improvement?

I guess the problem is complicated by the fact that you can have as many different score and part layouts simultaneously as you need, the main difference between them being the page templates. Dorico does not really know in advance what your intentions are.

Even with different page templates, there are still templates assigned to Score(s) and templates assigned to Parts.
I use several custom paragraph styles created in the very handy Paragraph Styles window.
In this window, just as you can choose there a different size for the Score and the Parts (which doesn’t seem to be a problem for Dorico), there could also be a Hide / Show option.
