Divisi/solo problem... need help

I have one system where there’s a single staff for the celli, divisi.
Then, on the next system I need to have a solo cello on one staff, and the others on the bottom staff (now unisono.)

But for some reason, it keeps putting my tutti notes in the solo staff at the system break.
What am I doing wrong?

If I move the Divisi marker over by one bar, to where the music actually starts for that soloist, then both solo and tutti staves get the same music, if I delete notes in one staff, it deletes them in both staves.

So, que faire? What to do?

I read that Dorico adds the extra staff BENEATH the pre-existing staff. But then why does it label the staff correctly? If this is the case, Dorico is renaming the original staff to “solo” and the added solo staff as “gli altri”. It’s confusing and makes no sense.

(The forum is putting my 2nd image in first place and my first image in 2nd… so… read it from bottom up.)

It’s recommended to avoid divisi changes in the middle of a system, so the simplest solution would be to start your system on the new divisi (the one with Solo & gli altri)

If for some reason you need to have this last bar of normal divisi and then the solo/gli altri divisi in the same system, I believe the best you can achieve without a workaround is that:

If you want that (that’s what I understand):

I’m afraid it requires to work around wether or not you use the divisi feature for the section before the solo (it looks like you don’t):

Galley view with divisi for the first bars:

And same result without divisi at the beginning:

In both cases, the main challenge is actually the ties, that I had to fake with laissez vibrer ties.

It has been this way from the introduction of the divisi function back in 2018, and I’ve been maintaining that they got it backwards ever since. There are no known plans to change it. I’m afraid you have to babysit your system breaks or even duplicate the player or the flow.

… and this is the only practical notation from the solo player’s perspective, not to move his focus to another line twice right before a solo.

OK, this solo doesn’t seem that challenging, but right before for example one of the cello solos in Verdi operas you will distract the player unnecessarily

it looks like the only way to solve my issue is to actually keep the solo and gli altri music on one staff, in two different voices. (the solo is actually in voice 2 upstem, while the tutti uses voice 1 upstem and downstem. this way I get actual playback of the section AND of a solo cello.)

I hate that this weakness in Dorico forces my hand as to the notation of the passage.
There’s nothing challenging about the music, it’s an Adagio movement, but it would have been nice to be able to keep the solo to its own staff.

I guess I can add a stave for the cello from bar 1 to the end, then simply hide it (let Dorico remove the staff where it has no material.)

One suggestion I saw online was to use an ossia staff, but notes in an ossia staff do not play back.

Also in the example offered by @charles_piano you can have the Solo cello voice assigned to a cello solo patch (sorry if I misinterpreted your assumption):

You can’t add staves to section players, AFAIK.

Probably a better method would be to add a Soloist Cello Player, and add it to the section Violoncelli layou (this takes care automatically of your staff labelling and distribution of music in the score, independently from system breaks)t:
