Dmx can´t connect to my lights with VST Live 3 Pro

I bought this DMX-USB cable(DSD TECH SH-RS09B USB a DMX Cable), but I can’t connect any DMX lights in VST Live 3. Is it a cable problem? Do I need to use a different DMX-USB cable? Is it a configuration issue?
In out doesn’t appear usb DMX…
*Drivers are unavailable.

As far as I know. VST Live does not support this type of Chinese controllers. Last week I also encountered a similar problem. Controllers that have a DMX signal generator inside are supported.
By type

ENTTEC 70304 DMX USB Pro - DMX512/RDM to USB 2.0 Interface | eBay

Then in DMX SETUP you will see this controller

There are 2 solutions to your problem.

Or buying a good DMX controller

Or the implementation of your ideas through the ArtNet protocol. Which also implies the purchase of equipment.

Thank you for answering!

What kind of usb-DMX do you recommend for VST Live 3 Pro?

I personally suggest ArtNet node instead of USB2DMX.

Hi,

I have no experience in using DMX but I’m planing to use 2 Lights with VST live.

Am I right that VST live (3) is able to control two (or more) DMX lights via my WLAN access point (which I already use) to this interface/ArtNet node:

without any other hardware (of course 2 DMX lightsources)?

(the link is safe)

Thanx in advance (didn’t want to start a new thread…thought it might fit here…)

Ok. Thanks!

I’m going to investigate ArtNet Node because it’s something new to me.

Air2DMX looks like an interesting product but it worries me:-

  • It’s 2.4GHz only. Crowded frequency.
  • It’s 512 DMX channels only - so only supports one universe.

IMHO you would be better with a hard wired ArtNet node like the Chauvet AN2 or similar.

Thank you for your response.

And what about this models?

Eurolite USB-DMX512 PRO Interface MK2

Eurolite DXT PoE Art-Net Node I

Better ethernet connection than usb?

Sorry, I have no experience of those devices.

I prefer anything networked to USB - no device drivers needed and no worry whether there are enough physical ports, whether windows will “decide” it doesn’t like the device, whether the port will fail mechanically due to continuous use. Also makes it easier if you change laptops in the future and works easily with Mac and Windows.

Hi,
How can I draw a perfect diagonal line in VST Live 3 so that the moving head light doesn’t jump around?

turn off SNAPPING, I think that is what you are looking for.

I don’t think anything does perfect straight lines - but what you can do is change the speed of the device movement using DMX and then give it the new target position.

instrument line + no snap

DMX resolution is either 8 or 16 bit, that’s 0-255 in integers (whole numbers). 16 bit uses 2 DMX channels (i.e. 2x8 bit) and you’ll see this in fittings that have a coarse and fine position setting.

Have a look at this explanation from EnTec DMX Basics: 8-bit vs 16-bit control : Technical Support

Even if you could generate a perfect line it would still be composed of a number of points in the range - VSTL quantises the line to the values that would be transmitted. There is no magic setting/math behind the scenes that says “I’m going to transmit a ramp” during playback.

If your motor speed is fast then you would see the head move to each position and therefore the jerking. If you slow the motor down (with a suitable DMX message) then you will get a smoother movement. As I said before, you really only need to set the position you want the head to move to and the speed it’s going to move at, which is more efficient as it only needs 2 messages. It’s a trade off.

Thank you! I will check it.

For now, it’s working with the USB-DMX cable, but the moving head is doing strange things, like moving backward slightly when it should be moving forward. It probably won’t do this with a DMX Ethernet interface.

DMX is about channel levels for the 512channels/universe, nothing more. VL will send the same channel levels on USB and on ArtNet, therefore the same might happen with any controller. But if the USB-DMX is some cheap one or has a bug in it’s driver, that is a different case that I can’t see.

Ok. Thank you for your answer!
I’ll have to do some testing and rule things out…

I’d also like to know if there are shortcuts like in Cubase because I’m trying to work the same way as in Cubase, but I’m finding it difficult to work faster on simple things like positioning markers with the keyboard…

I miss tutorials like the one Dom Sigalas does in Cubase, for example, to go much deeper and get the most out of VL, since I also teach this type of program to my students. :folded_hands:

You know about the menu Devices, Actions and Shortcuts? The Transport tab lets you define keyboard and MIDI shortcuts to set or goto Marker1 & 2. All of the shortcuts can be redefined to your needs.

Ok!
I was trying to use the same shortcuts as in Cubase, but I couldn’t find them…

Thank you so much!
