DMX scene triggering

Hello

We have our lights running from DMX tracks within VST Live, working great! But I’m looking for a way to trigger a scene by some means when a song is NOT playing.

At the end of every song, playback stops and lights go blackout as per design and settings. But between some of the songs I would like to trigger a scene for front lights to show the singer during an intro or whatever audience engagement, before starting the next song. Any ideas for this?

Maybe create a dummy song with just the DMX track in it?

Or use an external DMX program and sent MIDI triggers to that instead.

Or use a MIDI track to pause the song (using actions) after the DMX you want has triggered. We have noted that this would cause the song to restart rather than resume but this would not have a detrimental effect in your scenario.

Or put the DMX at the end of the previous song which may not work if you reorder your set.

I would setup a tail for each song - additional three Parts - 1) Part with DMX commands that set lights on singer, 2) looped Part for infinity, 3) End Part just to have ability to exit from looped Part using key Down (or use L to exit Loop) and place there DMX commands that sets off the lights on singer. Place Song End Marker next to End Part and set Song Action to Start Next song at Song End Marker.

Simple, isn’t?

I would create DMX clips / PARTs (and activate DMX chasing)

Then you can “dial” the parts with different DMX clips

Thank you all for the suggestions! Good workarounds with same idea, running an extra song / part / loop with triggers to get in or out, but since these are not predetermined breaks after specific songs when this should happen, it’s trickier.

My ideal solution would be a scene that could be triggered by a button when project or song is NOT playing. Little bit like playing a VST instrument live, even if song is not started.

I think I’m missing something important to understand fklamus’s idea

@fkalmus, I also didn’t get your idea. You cannot send DMX values on channels by simple switching/dialing parts. Or can you?

@ArthurNeeman @anttima read plz again!
Wrote different “DMX CLIPS”

A module like the media player, but to launch dmx scenes (set bpm and import dmx track in the module) would be an appreciated addition to be honest, but there are much more important things to be fixed before adding new features imho !

Cheers, Ciro.

Hi All,

Exactly — something like a DMX-Scene-ABX-Track-XYZ-Player Module would be the dream solution.

In that case, you’d load a global Module that lets you trigger a specific scene at any moment without interrupting the flow of your show.

It’s always a balance between bug fixes and important feature requests. At the moment, I agree that we shouldn’t start implementing this feature just yet. But if you’d like to sketch some interface ideas or suggest details — feel free! Always welcome. :slightly_smiling_face:

And, @ciro1983811, since we’re already talking:

Could you share your top three bugs that you feel should be fixed first?

Thank you,
Michael.

Hi @Spork , I can’t speak for everybody, especially as I don’t use layers and I use very little midi tracks to send prgrchngs or cc’s. But everything else I use a lot.

Top 4:

  • lyrics moving, editing, importing LRC.. still messy the implementation of clips is still buggy, multiple lrc import on the same track, time zero for the import should be at the transport locator position, so I can import and manage multiple clips. Clip cutting, pasting, moving around messes the highlighted text during playback, and so on
  • DMX copy, paste of multiple channel in different channel numbers/ transport positions still messy.
  • From .83 again stereo out channel goes back to last position in mixer at project reopening
  • Very horrible one: tracks undo make my rec channels linked to global stacks to lose their connection and messes up undo history, so I am forced to avoid undo in tracks at all costs having 8 rec tracks per song
  • Chords clip editing implementation like the lyrics, and… multiple lyrics tracks of different colors that you can assign to one or multiple lyrics window

But that ‘s just the things that I use most, everyone will have their most hated bugs list

All considered I’m a happy user!

Edit: oh, and I really need a DMX transformer like we have on mid!!! Pretty please!!
