Do I need a syncstation per Nuendo DAW for edgeframe sync?

Hi!

I know the Syncstation has been discontinued, but I am still chasing edgeframe sync. It is unclear whether I need one per DAW in a larger post setup. There are two system link outputs on the back - would that allow me to connect two nuendo machines to the one syncstation for accurate edge frames across both machines?

On the back of what? What physical machines do you plan to sync beyond the computer(s)?

Back of the Syncstation…

Tri-level will be driving sync for video. Potentially 4 machines in total including a DAW with blackmagic card for picture output.

No, there’s always one machine “Master” and all the other machines are slaves.
You can get sample-accurate sync between two Nuendo DAW’s with System Link.
The System Link from the master is feeded to the Syncstation and all other machines slave through timecode.

We are using Syncstation to slave a variety of machines, including a Blackmagic Hyperdeck.

It is a little bit unclear from your answer whether a Syncstation is needed per DAW, or whether the master/slave configuration works to achieve edge frame across all.

Are you resolving edge frame on every machine individually, or are you just doing it once through one Syncstation then using master/slave to align additional DAWs?

Hi,

I regularly do multi-rig mixes, and my experience is that one syncstation is sufficient. It’s sometimes a bit tricky to set up, but my usual situation is 2 Nuendo and 1 or 2 ProTools rigs.

One Nuendo has the syncstation, in rs422 remote mode. The Nuendo rig is sending and receiving VST System Link info to the other Nuendo through a MADI port. The syncstation is connected to a (vintage, now) CB Electronics Sr4 or similar synchroniser, to sync to the pro tools rig (s).

That being said……

In recent years, with the evolution of MAC OS, our syncstation is no longer as solid for sync as it used to be. That is very disappointing, and annoying. So we tried with MIDI over Ethernet using the default MAC OS protocol. It was very, very solid in terms of repeatable sync (recording the 2 pop on the pro tools recorder). However, to use this with ProTools means that you have to ditch the Sync HD device, which in turn means no more tri-level HD sync. Sync and speed (drift) are then down to MTC, and wordclock. Not ideal, but the proof is in the 2 pop.
