Do not manage to get dotted quarter rests in 12/8 time signature automatically

In a piece I am copying with 12/8 time signature ⅜ and 6/8 rest are always shown as dotted quarter and dotted half notes respectively. I don’t manage to get this presentation using the Dorico settings and each time have to use forced duration to get in particular the dotted quarter rests. This despite having all note group settings in notation options with the dotted variant and having entered the time signature at the start of the piece as 3+3+3+3. It works for the sounding notes but not for the rests.

Is there a setting or time signature format I missed to get dotted quarter rest automatically.

You should go and change some settings in Notation options (Cmd or Ctrl+Shift+N)>Rests, so that Dorico is allowed to use dotted quarter rests in compound bars.

I get dotted rests in 12/8 bar by default, just by entering the time signature as 12/8 and with factory Notation Options.

Many thanks for the fast answers.

Marc, I once more went through all the rests settings in notation options and activated all where a dot is mentioned and now it finally works. I must have forgotten one. In the particular flow I am working on.

Aaron I don’t dare going back to factory settings to avoid resetting other options I set earlier.

My point was just that Dorico gives this notation by default, and if you’re not seeing that notation, it’s because of some changes you made.

You could use Library Manager to compare you Notation Options to the factory settings and see which things are different – and/or use it to reset Notation Options > Rests to factory settings.

Yes I understood. The library manager is indeed very powerful to do this type of comparison of an older project (2 years at least)being extended with a new flow. It is some what overwelming however if you have done a lot of changes on the different topics available in the past.

I recently started using Art Conductor for Dorico for my none VSL instruments and this adds a lot of stuff using a PBT file for nearly every instrument for which you add an Art Conductor expression map. It might not be very elegant and needs a lot of hidden *none standard” articulations but it does work. (but it has added nothing related to dotted notes and rests of course)
