Dorico keeps randomly losing connection to the audio engine. It especially seems to happen when importing MusicXML scores from Sibelius or Finale. Whenever it happens, you hear a quick click or pop in the audio system. I’m using an RME 802 interface under Windows 11.
I noticed the app created a diagnostic file. (attached)
Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.5 MB)
Thanks for the diagnostics @kmm .
In the latest application log I can see as last entry that Dorico detected the audio engine process has died, but there is no crash dump contained in the diagnostics.
Could you please check under
C:/Users/kmm08/Documents/Steinberg/CrashDumps
Is there any recent dump file to be found?
Odd thing is that the program did not generate a CrashDump file yesterday. However I did find some files that it created previously after similar audio engine problems. Not sure though if they were from the same issue or not.
(see attached)
Dorico 5 AudioEngine 5.6.30 64bit 2024.3.7 17.34.47.673-freezedump.dmp (1.2 MB)
Dorico 5 AudioEngine 5.6.30 64bit 2024.3.7 17.49.27.513-freezedump.dmp (1.2 MB)
Unfortunately the dump files are from March this year, so they are totally unrelated.
Could you please copy and paste the line
C:/Users/kmm08/AppData/Roaming/
into the address bar of a File Explorer window and then with the search field find for crash dump files by typing in
*.dmp
There might be plenty of output. Among that, have a look for anything related to AudioEngine. If you are unsure about it and also generally it would be a good idea, could you think about having a remote screen sharing session with. That way I could help you most efficiently. What do you think?
Now it also keeps randomly losing midi connection, especially when other audio/midi apps are open at the same time and I close or open new files. The files I’ve been testing with the last day or two are all new created in Dorico. I have stopped importing in XML files for the time being. I’m not really sure how the app can lose connection with both the audio interface and the midi keyboard simultaneously, especially since they are connected to separate USB ports and use their own drivers for each. Regarding the .dmp files, there are no recent files generated in that folder, only the older ones. The app is only generating diagnostic files (see new attached). Unfortunately I cannot reproduce these issues when I want to. They appear to happen randomly.

Since there are no crash dumps contained in the diagnostics, may I ask you to add some entries in the Windows Registry by means of the Registry Editor (regedit.exe). I don’t know how experienced you are with such things, so only really do if you are feeling confident. What I want you to do is:
– Press the Windows key and type reg and press the enter/return key, the Registry Editor shall open.
– Add the Key:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps
–Add the values:
Name: DumpFolder
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Value: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps
Name: DumpCount
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 10 (decimal) This will collect 10 application crash dumps.
Name: DumpType
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0x1
Then run and crash your app and have a look at %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps for the dump.
And btw, have you considered about a remote session with me?
I don’t know if it’s related, but I have a similar issue with my M1 macbook, and have had the issue across several iterations of v. 5. When playing a project through the headphone output, the audio will cut out momentarily and then return. Sometimes it will switch to the internal speakers, and when it does I cannot adjust the volume with the volume keys because Apple OS thinks those keys are still controlling the headphone output. The only ways to fix it are to remove and then reinsert the headphone jack, or to manually select headphone output in the audio settings. I also notice that the audio frequently cuts out when I use the volume keys to adjust the volume.
I’ve tried turning off the automatic audio select option, and setting it for headphones, but then I have to go in and set this every time I return to my desk because Dorico doesn’t retain the headphone setting once I’ve disconnected and restarted.
Hi @jjm_335, I don’t think that it is related, because user kmm is on Windows and not Mac.
I figured as much, though I wonder if I’m not the only one with the issue.
Unfortunately, as mentioned, I can’t actually run the app and make it crash because I’m not sure what causes the issue, however it appears to happen randomly. In fact, the app doesn’t necessarily crash all the time, at times it just seems to loose connection to the audio or midi. I had it open a good part of the day today and hadn’t had any issues as of yet. But I didn’t have any other audio/midi apps open today while using it, so not sure if that could be a possible issue as well. I know Windows doesn’t always handle audio/midi as well as Mac, especially when multiple apps are open simultaneously. The other day when I lost connection, after quitting all apps open and just reopening Dorico on it’s own, it seemed to start working again.
If necessary, I can do a remote session if that would help at all. Let me know.
Actually I spoke too soon. Upon closing a project I was working on in Dorico, the app crashed, this time generating a Crash Dump report (see attached). Dorico was the only app open and running at the time.

Hi @kmm , that what you attached is a freeze dump and not a crash dump. The difference is, upon a crash the program can not continue running, game over. A freeze however might only be an intermittend deadlock. E.g. one thread waiting for another thread or a system resource, so chances are that the program recovers from the freeze situation.
And yes, let’s have a remote session, I send you a private message.
Had another freeze dump yesterday (see attached). All freezes and crashes appear to have something to do with the audio engine. So far the two freezes happened after closing a project I was working on. I already reinstalled the app and reset preferences (as requested by support team). Did not help. Also odd is that I’m not even using any plugins, I currently have playback engine set to silence and only using an external piano for playback. As previously mentioned, I have had audio engine freezes and crashes with past Dorico versions as well, but wasn’t really using the app much then.

Sorry @kmm , I have not replied, yet, nor looked at your diagnostics, but I will do soon. A little more patience please.
I just downloaded and installed the latest 5.1.70. Audio System froze again (see attached). This is almost daily now. Problem is every time it does this, after restarting the app, it won’t connect at all any longer to the audio system unless you restart the whole computer. It also loses midi connection even though the midi and audio are connected via separate USB ports with separate drivers (Yamaha/RME). And I’m still only using the external piano for playback currently. Haven’t even gotten around to trying out VST3 plugins yet. And I don’t even have any other apps running, only Dorico. The last time I remember having to restart one of my computers every time an app crashed was probably over 25 years ago now.

I’ve sent all these to tech support as well (not sure who gets them or not).
I’ve sent you a private message via this board. Please check
