Dorico 5 No Longer Launches without Issues

M4 MacBook Pro; MacOS 15.1.1; Dorico 5.1.70.2200

I’m very confused. I’m having a similar (but not identical) problem to the one posted by asbefore at this link. According to Steinberg Activation Manager (SAM) I have Dorico SE on my machine, but SE is NOT activated. (I don’t want it as I will never use it.) I downloaded the trial of Dorico 5 a couple of months ago before buying Dorico 5 through MakeMusic. (I no longer want it on my machine. I use the licensed copy I purchased.) The trial version of Dorico still appears in the SAM with a button next to it to buy along with the licensed copy of the Dorico 5 app I purchased through MakeMusic. So the SAM shows 3 versions of Dorico. (Can I have just the 1 I use?)

Now, months later, when I launch the Dorico app (double click it in Apps folder), more times than not, it attempts to launch SE and freezes the machine or, on rare occasions, it tells me Dorico is not licensed on my machine. (This machine has a massive amount of RAM and HD space.)

I have never (knock on wood) had any issues opening Dorico 5 on my Mac Studio.

The issue on my laptop is actually becoming frustrating. I find myself avoiding using it because it’s become such a challenge to get it to launch.

  1. I wish I knew how to completely delete the Dorico 5 trial from the SAM, but I can’t figure that out.
  2. I wish I knew how to completely delete Dorico SE from Steinberg Download Assistant (I will never use it.) and the SAM.
  3. I would like to return to the happy days of being able to simply launch and use Dorico 5 on my laptop. Any ideas?

I have not tried doing anything for fear of messing it all up even worse.

All Dorico versions are the same executable, only the license will allow to use some parts of the software. So there should not be more than one Dorico app in your computer (pressing alt or shift+ctrl while launching pro should open Elements or SE). Hope it helps.

As Marc says, it’s possible for Dorico to run as Dorico Elements or Dorico SE if you hold down a modifier key while launching it, even if you’re using a Pro licence. This is intended to allow, e.g. teachers to see what their students will be able to do. So that might explain your problem.

Otherwise, if it goes wrong again, you can run Help > Create Diagnostic Report within Dorico and then post the report here - that will allow one of us to take a look.

Thx. The issue finally devolved into not initializing the audio engine and shutting down. I found how to correct that in the forum, killing a VST process in the activity monitor, and now (knock on wood) it seems to be a happy app again.

@TimTom, I have removed the Dorico SE license, and the expired Dorico Pro 5 trial, from your Steinberg ID account.
