Hello,
I’m brand new to Dorico (background in Sibelius and Finale) and learning my way around it.
An issue I’m having is that when Dorico Pro 5.1.51.2153 is running, the keyboard backlight on my Macbook Pro keeps turning on and then off again roughly every 30 seconds. I’m running MacOS 13.5.2 (Ventura) still, so a bit behind with updates, but I need to keep this version for the moment. I’ve done a bit of searching on this and can’t find anyone else mentioning it.
It’s not a huge issue, but a bit of a nuisance. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anyone else seeing this issue?
I don’t think there’s any way for Dorico itself to adjust the keyboard backlight. Typically that is controlled by sensors in the computer itself, which decide on the backlight level according to the level of ambient light. To turn this feature off:
• Go to System Settings (or System Preferences in older macOS versions).
• Select Keyboard.
• Uncheck Adjust keyboard brightness in low light.
You may possibly have other third party software installed on your computer that’s interfering with the backlight.
I confirmed that “Adjust keyboard brightness in low light” is turned off already. This only happens when Dorico is running, no other time, so I can’t see what else could be causing it. At any rate, for now, I just set the keyboard brightness to zero so the backlight doesn’t come on at all. I’m a touch-typist anyway, so not much need for it.
If no one else is seeing the same behaviour and I can’t find any references to it anywhere, it must just be something specific to my machine that I’ve yet to figure out. Not a big deal, just mildly annoying.
All I can say is that most (if not all) audio-related software keep the macOS awake—i.e., prevent sleep settings from applying—while all Steinberg products also keep the display awake—i.e., prevent energy saving settings for the display from applying.
You will find several posts about this in all Steinberg-related sub-forums and while it has been requested that this be changed, it is considered by the teams “a feature” and not “a bug”. So, at least, it is intentional.
What I do is to put the display to sleep manually with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Shift-Eject (if you have an external keyboard with the Eject key) or Ctrl-Shift-Power button (if not).
I hope this helps.
