John Barron’s BBC Core Templates do not work in Dorico 6. I tried to load his BBC Core with piano to no avail. Dorico froze or crashed. I really hope this somehow gets fixed. Turning off Auto makes no difference.
(I have NPPE but since NotePerformer discontinued them I’m stuck on 4.5 if I want to be able to use it.
Has anyone even made a BBC core with Spitfire’s piano template that works in 6.1?
You could do this: Help > Create Diagnostic Report which will create a zip file on your desktop. That zip file please send to u dot stoermer at steinberg do de or upload it here for @Ulf to analyze the crashes.
Someone else in the forum should be able to advise you about the BBC Core template but the crashes would need to be investigated either way.
did it used to work in Dorico 5 or is it the first time you’ve tried this combination? Normally I’d use NPPE with the BBC Core unless you absolutely have to have native NP5 for some reason. Having said that, I’m just running it natively now without any issues (although my own setup runs from Vienna Ensemble Pro with a few changes to the original John Barron maps). If it’s actually crashing, as @arco says, the first step is getting the diagnostic examined.
So far I have stuck with the original NP5. What is the effect of upgrading NP on files created using NP4.5 and NPPE? Would those files still play back as created with the older system?
Has Arne @Wallander commented on that?
Are there specific changes that should or must be made?
The NPPE plugin will only work with NP 4 so if NP 5 is installed, it won’;t be possible to play files using that as far as I’m aware. Of course NP5.0 did have the option of an integrated NPPE but using that gives completely different (and from my tests, inferior) playback from the v4 plugin.
Lee, are you running the bbc templates you linked in Dorico 6.1?
For me, they only work in 5. I had already tried both the core and core with piano templates by turning off Auto in order to load them in 6.1 and they do not work.
I had tried that ( auto off ), made Core the default template and Dorico immediately turned grey and froze. I had to get it to eventually shutdown ctl alt delete etc and reboot if I could or force crash Windows. I’m glad yours is working though.
NPPE BBC Core and NotePerformer worked perfectly in 6.1 . The playback engine loaded in just over 5 minutes. All the crashes of previous ended up corrupting my spitfire BBC so I ran repair on it. Moral here for me is “Use what works”. And Auto template in preferences worked, loading NotePerformer.
All this because I wanted to be able to export Midi (which NotePerformer will not do).
I’m not fooling with those BBC templates further until I know why all those problems happened.
The Auto template in the Preferences is aimed at making things simple for those of us who do not want to waste time with the playback side of things, especially loading playback templates, modifying them, etc. My understanding is that it will load most of the included libraries and set everything properly (routing, expression maps).
Since NotePerformer is not included with Dorico, there is that part in your last post that doesn’t fit those explanations. My guess is that you were using NotePerformer template as the default one and not Auto. Which is perfectly fine and exactly what you need to do to use NP with its NPPE. Just food for thought
I’m baffled. Something must have changed since this was written. Maybe the update from NotePerformer? I don’t see anything in the Version history from Wallander that deals with that auto setting.
On the other hand, this last two days, I solved the problem of two French-speaking users who decided to buy NotePerformer and could not make it work because of the Auto setting. So if anyone could help me understand, I would be grateful!
