Dorico 6.1 proofreading & Bb Bass Clarinet range

I’m probably old fashioned, but I thought that knowing the ranges of standard instruments was part of being a professional composer, and looking up the rare few used for special effects was the other part.

You’re not old fashioned, but that is a tad demeaning. I may be even more old fashioned than you, but I understand the act of copying of one part to another can result in having notes out of range for the target instrument and not noticing it as you continue writing. I have done this a time or two, most recently on a large transcription I published last year. ugh…

Short answer–it happens to the best of us and having a reliable way of proofreading that is helpful, but if that help is buried in non-helpful responses, then we’re just as likely to miss the notice. I don’t use Proofreading in Dorico often right now because of these issues, though it is helpful for a lot of things. I do wait until everything is finished before even turning it on, though.

When starting a new project, these false alerts are relatively easy to handle, as they can be dismissed with a single click. However, in the case of large projects that have been migrated from version 5 to 6, the sheer number of false alerts can become quite disruptive. Our intention in raising this issue is simply to provide constructive feedback and help improve Dorico’s proofreading feature. Framing the discussion around professionalism does not really contribute to addressing the underlying problem.

Clancy,
In the case you postulate, knowing the range of instruments but having something slip by, Dorico still highlights what it considers out-of-range notes, which as an experienced musician you could note but then ignore based on your own experience. I would imagine any experienced composer could do the same, or even turn off the feature if the colors were a distraction.

I don’t use the new proofreading feature while I compose. I might turn it on briefly as a last step through–and to the extent the Dorico Team improves it, I am all for that.
