Problem:

The first chord symbol is a custom chord symbol, D7sus#4, containing the notes D-G#-A-C, created via Chord Symbols…, in which it is named All roots 7sus#4.

Each element (Text: 7, Text: SUS, and Composite: smufl.glyph.alteration.prefix.sharpsmall.modal4) is scaled to 75% in the Edit Chord Symbol Component dialog. Some X offsets, including one for the 7, were attempted, but did not appear to alter the output, though the modified offets hold.

Opening it in the Chord Symbol Kerning Pairs… dialog allows movement of the elements, and I tried moving the extension element (7sus#4) from a 0.00 offset to 1.00, but it will not hold after closing the dialog. Reopening it in the same dialog shows the unmodified offsets.

@dspreadbury told me via Facebook that Chord Symbol Kerning Pairs… cannot be used with custom chord symbols, but then:

  • How can you control kerning between a root and the next element?
  • Why did none of the X offsets hold in the Edit Chord Symbol Component dialog?

Result:

The elements are too close, particularly the kerning between the D and 7. Ideally, there should also be slightly more space between each of the other elements, too.

Query:

How can I achieve the desired result?

Thanks.

The problem with this editor is that it doesn’t allow you to specify an X offset for the first element. This has been a request of mine for years, but the workaround is to simply insert a blank space as the first element, then insert a 7 for the second element. As there’s now a first element (the blank space) to create an offset from, you can have an X offset for the 7.

Thanks, @FredGUnn . That is helpful, though awfully clunky. And setting X offsets still don’t register. But I can get a little more (a little TOO much) space between the root and the 7.

Additionally, I can’t find any way to get to the original Create Chord Symbol dialog (the one that includes the naming and addition of intervals to play). There must be some way to do that, no? @dspreadbury
