Dorico 6 from 5 worth it?

You can show the accidental in the Engrave mode property panel on the condensed part.

If I remove your condensing change in bar 22, the oboes stay condensed on the next system and the slur of oboe 2 is not missing.

By reapplying the p<f on both oboes, I got this weird thing:

But then it was easy to flip the oboe 1 one in Engrave Mode:

By the way, I don’t know how you’re entering your dynamic chains (e.g. p < f), but in many cases the final dynamic isn’t attached to the note — it’s attached to the following rest.

As I suspected, the errors you find can be corrected with the tools available in Dorico 5.1.81 (your file would make Dorico 6.1.10 hang). Condensing is clearly not an easy feature, you’ll need to spend some time and ask questions if you find yourself in trouble. Here’s your corrected file (for the different things you’ve described). The dynamics problem at J were user mistakes, the hairpins were not correctly set (hairpins were too long, the position was modified in Engrave mode, in a way that should not be done — hairpin for first oboe moved below…

To sum this up, I’d say you should not be relying on Engrave mode to “cure” stuff you’re not satisfied with. Notation options (and their equivalent in condensing changes) should be enough to get you 98% where you want, and Engrave mode should be used only to slightly adjust things horizontally or vertically, but not as strong as “I want this to be above/below the staff”.

I hope it will help!

[Edit] @charles_piano has described the discrepancies I’ve found with most of your hairpins…

This is the choice I’ve made for length of hairpins in the preferences, I take great care of stopping them before the last note if I need to input a dynamic on the last note (so that the hairpin is not attached to a further point, which causes problems)

Thanks so much. I managed to fix the issue with the missing hairpin in 129-31 a different way and I know about the dynamic chains (I had to spend hours adjusting them - this is my first project in Dorico). But, I cannot temporarily override condensing in m. 35 to resolve the missing slur issue. I’ve tried everything and the manual condensing is still greyed out under condensing change.

Thank you. Should the choice above “link dynamics, etc.) also be selected?

Thank you. Done!
