I see in the announcement that in addition to Dorico 6 Pro, that Dorico 6 for iPad was released. I don’t see it in the app store, and my current iPad version is still at 5. FWIW, I had also purchased the lifetime option of the iPad version.
The iPad version is in the approval queue at Apple and will be released as soon as they have approved the app.
Wonderful news! I was going to ask about this, too.
Can you share the new features already?
Dorico for iPad doesn’t have any unique new features of its own in Dorico 6, but it includes many of the new features of Dorico 6. Check out the What’s New tab in the Hub on the iPad to see which of the features are available (which differs, of course, whether you have the free version, or have bought the in-app subscription or Lifetime Unlock).
What a pity. I was hoping that note input with the Apple Pencil would be implemented. You’ve already made it clear that it would be a pretty big undertaking. And unfortunately I can’t estimate for how many people this would be important. In other words, whether it would be economically viable and perhaps even generate new customers.
But is it still something you have on your radar?
Of course, I’m also happy about the other functions. I have also already updated to Pro 6 on Mac
I think I’ve already read posts about how inefficient is writing with a pencil (even with an optimized Apple Pencil 5, when it’s available…) compared with using a qwerty keyboard or a MIDI keyboard… I understand this feature is probably not too high on the pile
FWIW, I bought the magical product that could let you write on your iPad (I got it at half price…) and don’t even remember its name. That’s how badly I needed that feature! (StaffPad, it just came back to my mind. I was planning on scanning my software, but my brains got faster.)
We would like to provide more support for working with Apple Pencil in Dorico for iPad, but we have no plans for handwriting input. Instead we would like to support Pencil as a means of “mouse input”, which is feasible with the Pencil because its tip is small enough that you can place notes accurately in a way that you can’t with your finger.
That could be useful. Owners of apple keyboards attached to the iPad (sorry, I don’t remember their names, although I’m writing this very message with it) will be happy to use the trackpad.
That’s what I meant. Handwriting is not for me. Pencil like a mouse
Yes. But I can use my iPad Pro for that. As @dspreadbury described I am hoping to use my Apple Pencil like the computer mouse. Opening context menu with the different note values by pressing the pencil would be killer. That way you could input notes with minimum motion.
Better pencil support would be great, but my biggest issues with Dorico for iPad are:
Bugs and UI/UX issues:
-
broken zoom
-
sloppy scrolling
-
things get easily selected and deselected while scrolling or zooming which then influences zooming and everything quickly gets completely unpredictable
-
full screen doesn’t work with external display. Dorico’s main view resizes up to a certain limit (resolution of the main display?) and doesn’t go beyond that. I believe that this is the easiest issue to fix from this list…
-
keys get stuck on piano keyboard while inputing notes
Missing features:
-
routings are not organised, all the AU units and external MIDI devices are in a single long list. Install KORG Gadgets and it already becomes difficult to find what you want
-
no virtual MIDI ports (we can’t send MIDI to Logic, Cubasis or other apps that support it)
I guess that the UI/UX issues are there because of Dorico being a Qt Desktop app compiled for iPad without significant optimisation for multi-touch and other iPad-specific features. That’s understandable from developer’s point of view, but it makes Dorico for iPad almost unusable in most scenarios.
We definitely want to spend some time reworking aspects of the interaction with the score view in Dorico for iPad – this would in fact be a necessary prerequisite for Apple Pencil support in any case – but it’s not a small job, and it also has implications for the desktop version.
Prioritising all the many competing demands for our time is extremely tough, and there are many, many things on our backlog waiting for our attention.
Totally understandable. I wish you could expand the team with few more devs, but así es la vida…
I also wish we could expand the team with a few more developers, of course!
Daniel, and when that’s ready, please back-port any improvements to desktop Dorico at one point, since I for example use a graphics table sometimes for inputting notes, which works satisfactorily enough.
My only wish in this regard would be a horizontal enlargement of the input area, i.e., the bar with the caret.
Thanks!
B.
So if I purchased Dorico "forever upgrade for iPad, I will not have to pay for an upgrade like I did for my Mac?
Yes, that’s right. The update will appear under the App Store on the iPad.
