Hi, I’m running into an issue with playback in version 6. The project is activated, the volume levels of both the instrument track and main output are 0.00, and an instrument is loaded into the VST slot and routed to the correct track. However, the playhead does not move, and there is no playback. There is a red icon on the bottom right of the window that brings up Device Setup options, but there’s no indication what’s going wrong. I’ve tried changing the ASIO driver from my interface (Apogee Element 24) to the built in audio, but there’s no change. I’ve confirmed Dorico 5 still plays properly.
Dorico Version 6.0.0.6026
Dorico 6 AudioEngine Version 6.1.0.13
MacOS Sequoia 15.4.1 (Apple Silicon)
Don’t know if this helps but when I opened my first file in Dorico 6 same thing happened to me on Mac. Go to preferences, then play, at the very bottom, audio device set up, device control panel, and check your output.
David, appreciate the help. It’s set to the correct device. Tried setting it to another device, didn’t work, set it back, didn’t work. Not sure if it’s a driver issue, but 5 is working fine here with the same settings.
FWIW, I just had this happen to me (also Sequoia 15.4.1 and an Apogee Element 46, plus NotePerformer 4.5.1) and Dorico generated a crash report to send to Steinberg. It worked for awhile, then after the crash I quit and relaunched and everything worked again.
Interesting. Just quit and relaunched, and it’s working now. I didn’t have it idling before, either, so not sure why it’s just suddenly decided to cooperate. I’ll work for a bit and see if it keeps up!
Hello Dorico 6 users, on my Mac with Sequoia 15.4.1 no Dorico file is played either. No problem on the same computer with version 5. I have already tried the steps recommended above several times. Of course I have also restarted. But the cursor does not move and nothing can be heard. I have tried various resubmissions. Now I urgently need help. Dorico Diagnostics.zip (966,1 KB)
Update, for Armin it turned out to be that the Apple Studio Display was the problem. It was the known issue that one has to create an aggregated device for the Studio Display and let only the Studio Display’s output ports participate. Then it started working.
Same thing is happening to me. Dorico 5 worked fine with Halion Sonic outputting to the Macbook built in speakers. In Dorico 6, after I press the play button, or P, nothing happens, and the playhead does not move. I’m on Mac OS 15.4.1. I tried all the above but it still won’t play. I made the mistake of writing a piece in Dorico 6 and didn’t test play until when I was done. Now I don’t think I can go back to Doico 5 with this piece, because its not a comaptible format.
You can always go back to Dorico 5 and continue working on your piece. Files saved in Dorico 6 can still be opened in Dorico 5 and indeed every earlier version all the way back to Dorico 1.0. (Though of course the older the version you open it in, the more things will be missing!)
I suspect the issue is a configuration problem, and you simply need to review the settings you have in Edit > Device Setup in Dorico 6. Don’t run Dorico 5 and Dorico 6 at the same time, as that will definitely cause problems. Quit Dorico 6, wait a bit, open Dorico 5, check the settings in Device Setup, then quit Dorico 5, wait a bit, open Dorico 6 again, and make identical choices in Device Setup.
I got it working. There were some items in /Library/Application Support/Components that I don’t need and removed. I’m not entirely sure that’s what fixed it, but it works now. Thanks.
Daniel, I think you hit the nail on the head regarding having Dorico 5 and 6 open simultaneously. I didn’t consider that could cause an issue, but that sure enough describes what I was doing when I had the issue. Thanks all for your insights!
So your solution is to go back to a previous version? The playback is a complete catastrophy kn Dorico 6. Sometimes things work, most often playback just results in silence, same for exports. Has it been tested at all? Why do you publish such a broken version?
Hi @abeschorner,
I’m sorry to hear about your trouble with Dorico. For a start, could you please post here a diagnostic report (Help > Create Diagnostic Report). That gives me a first overview. Then we can work out some particular issues. I’m here to help you, and I’m sure in the end we will find the cause of your problems. Thanks
… would you not expect a far higher number of users posting on this forum (let alone from the entire user base) to be reporting ‘catastrophic’ playback experiences if it were as widespread as you suggest?
You can be sure that testing of every aspect of every release of Dorico (including this one) is exhaustive!
And that nothing is ‘broken’ on publication that way.
I suspect we understand your frustration; but mightn’t it be more useful to the wider community to examine specifics in your environment than suggest fundamental faults as your OP appears to do? Good luck in finding a solution !
I have also have a problem with Dorico 6 Cycle Playback. I turned it on and it worked but when I turned it off, now only one clef has sound but all the 3rd party plugins still have sound in the Track Inspector. All the clefs were working perfectly before the Cycle Playback was turned on.
Welcome to the forum, @NZkiwimusico. It sounds as if perhaps something has become muted: try doing Play > Reset All Mute States and Play > Reset All Solo States.
I can’t find Play > Reset .. but there is Play > Deactivate All Mute States which failed to solve the mute issue. One of the instruments is playing (i.e is heard) but all the other sounds are muted.
