Dorico 6 - Noteheads problem

I just installed Dorico 6 Pro, and I’m looking forward to the new features (especially looping playback!)

However, as I was opening various scores created in 5.x, I noticed that some scores had a severe problem - the noteheads were missing!

After a bit of playing around (after a Windows 11 reboot), I discovered that if you use “Note Names” (which I sometimes do!), the problem occurs (it also occurs using “FigureNotes”, and sometimes “Default size”).

Here’s a few images. My temporary workaround, of course, is to use the “Larger Noteheads” for now.

Problem:

Solution:

Possibly there is something strange on my PC, but I haven’t messed with any fonts or strange Dorico options, and ALL my scores were fine in 5.x

Thanks for any info!

Hi @Tkearneyone, can you please post your Dorico file, to see what is going on? Thank you.

Did you reboot after installing?

(Preparing to ask this about a dozen times over the next few days)

Here’s a trivial score. It has problems with the default notehead set also.

NoteheadTest.dorico (1.4 MB)

Dan - I did - that was the first thing I tried (I’ve upgraded may times over the years - grin!).

Try my simple test project - if it’s fine, there must be something wrong on my end…

Tom

Confirmed Tom: only larger note heads work… Even defaults don’t…

It seems that the note head sets are broken somehow. For some reason the black/quarter note head is missing in the default note head set which can be fixed with a factory reset by clicking on the circular arrow.
Also, there are no definitions for “pitched” note heads in the corresponding sets:

Martin - great detective work for the default quarter note problem!

The factory reset fix works.

Thanks,

I just had a closer look at the definitions of the note name note heads. They all contain an Empty black note that covers the actual glyph. Same for the heads of the Figurenotes set. If I delete the empty note, the desired glyph appears. I guess, this needs to be fixed by the Dorico team.

Thanks – I can reproduce this problem. My apologies for the inconvenience. We’ll get this fixed as soon as we can.

Continuing the discussion from Dorico 6 - Noteheads problem:

same problem pitched notes not showing

There’s no need to start a new topic for this issue. This is the same problem as described in this thread, which I guess you already know. We’re aware of this issue and will have a fix for it as soon as possible.

same problem pitched notes note showing

sorry this is my first post so I pressed the wrong button!

Hi, i think i may be having a related issue, but not sure. I am attempting to create some new noteheads in the notehead sets. I cliked on “default noteheads” and then “new from selection”. Renamed “ghosts”. There is a red triangle in the corner of the box so I’m guessing that these are linked to the default notehead(?). If i change the name of the notehead, or the notehead shape etc… and hit okay, all noteheads of that type are replaced. It seems like I cannot separate the new notehead from the default. is this an issue or am i doing something wrong?

Is there a fix coming for this? I’m on the free trial but this is basic functionality for a music teacher so will be subscribing to sibelius if this is not fixed soon.

Welcome to the forum. The team delivers on these sorts of comments, be assured.

Welcome to the forum, @scoz. Yes, a fix is coming in the first maintenance update for Dorico 6. We’re in the process of deciding when that will be released, but it will be within a week or two, I’m sure.

Here is another problem with editing notehead sets that I don’t recall seeing anyone mention already. If I look at noteheadBlackOversized in the Edit Notehead dialog and increase the zoom to the maximum amount, this is what it looks like in Dorico 5:

And this is what it looks like in Dorico 6:

As you can see, the stem attachment points are on the edges of the notehead in Dorico 5 but not in Dorico 6 because the notehead is shifted up and to the left in Dorico 6.
