Dorico 6

Good to know. Hopefully it will be a pretty smooth method to select partial measures (or entire measures even if they contained notes tied to adjacent ones). I recently had to tweak an old work I did in Finale, and honestly forgot I could have selected and simply dragged to copy the changed notes over to the next instances; I have gotten so used to Dorico that I did copy and paste rather than drag-copying

BTW, Dorico supports drag and drop copy-pasting (select and drag while holding cmd+opt or ctrl+alt) :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, but not part of a tied note, nor have I been able to get it to work across pages, but I also was just dragging with the option key engaged, not cmd-option, so I’ll have to try that at some point. Thanks.

Hello dear colleagues!

Well, we are all waiting impatiently for upcoming Dorico 6, while working on our ongoing projects.

Personally I do hope to finally see some important customization, workflow and aleatoric music improvements.

  1. Would be nice to have an opportunity to import multiple Audio stems.
  2. To be able to use Divisimate in order to create orchestral combinations faster.
  3. To have a dedicated Tool for Re-arranging and Re-orchestration, which will allow us to easily change the engaged instruments for melodies, harmony and rhythm per selected section of an orchestral piece.
  4. An option to activate/deactivate the Ossia Staff playback.
  • Often I’m using the Ossias to give another variation, or different melody on repeat. Would be nice if we could have an option to decide when the Ossia playback to be activated automatically. For example on 1st, or 2nd repeat…
  1. Staff Versions, just like the Track Versions in Cubase.
  • To allow us to keep and save different variations of a melody, or harmony per piece of music.
  1. Right Panel - Custom Categories and Sub-categories - Techniques per instrument.
  • In case we are having different organs, from the same company, or different companies - Hauptwerk, VSL, or even NotePerfermer… would be nice to divide them into a separate sub-categories. Currently this isn’t possible.
  1. Proper playback of aleatoric music, even if it’s going to be partial in D6
  2. Would be nice to a Narrator / Speech staff where we could, properly, add text that has to be spoken. This is a very important improvement.

Greetings

A few earlier threads regarding D6 wishes, in case anyone missed some extant requests:

For Dorico to handle it, it would have to create multiple voices and VST instruments for each repetition.

You might be able to do it with some sort of VST audio sampler, using a pre-recorded sound, if it can play over-lapping repetitions for successive MIDI triggers.

Some libraries do have general purpose “orchestral chaos” samples, which you could use just as well for a lot of aleatoric sections.

No matter what will come. I like Dorico as it is and would be able to learn new thing I don’t know of for month or years to come. But I certainly will get the update on day one. To support the team. And to learn the newest shiny things that I didn’t know I would ever need.

But I really hope they give some love to Dorico for iPad. Pencil support for note input. Support for expression maps not only with imported projects. And for some reasons the current version is VERY CPU hungry. On an m4 iPad Pro I get dropouts with only a few SWAM instruments, while Cubasis can load a full romantic orchestra without any glitches

The team seems to have been busy with implementing Dorico notation engine in Cubase this past year. I am very satisfied with version 5 as it covers all my basic needs to produce orchestral mock-ups. The cool stuff as mentioned earlier would be :

  • to be able to add samples for sound FX (a system where you can add audio events with names and attached samples )
  • To choose a different playback template for a selected instrument in order to switch from one VST/ articulation map to another one (I had to program specific articulations to trigger the solo/mute of parts/channels of different VST for the same instrument in my VEPRO instances to do so : it works but took me a hours to figure out how to do it and program automations in VEPRO)
  • To have ornements implemented in playback
  • To be able to transform a chord into an arpeggio (not the symbol but actual notes)

Yes.
I’ve noticed the same problem, with a certain latency in the software’s response quite often, even in fairly modest projects (and without calling up audio). Weird.

However, my computer is far from being a turtle, so the writing needs to be revised or improved in version 6.

Cross my fingers for flexible (alternating) fingering input and an option to enter fingering on two separate lines for a single unisono voice.

I would love to see in Dorico 6 when instrument labels in condenced instruments and section players automatically change to plural, i.e. Corni in F I,II, Clarinetti in B I, II, Violini etc., while in parts instrument labels remain in singular for each player.

It would be nice in the next upgrade if they could make the screen move with the cursor when scrolling forwards or backwards as it does in Cubase.

As popular as that might be, my understanding is that it is not on the list of features the Development Team is working on.

Nic, for the people not using Cubase, how can we picture that? What do you mean with “screen” moving? It can’t be the physical screen, as it is fixed to the (physical) desktop. It can’t be the application window, as it would just be moving it away. The “canvas” itself, where we input the notes both in Galley View and in Page View do move when being dragged with the cursor (which turns into a hand, if I remember correctly). So which part is the one you propose?

There has been a rush of support for Cantai in the last few days since 01/04/25 and my first experience with it was very positive yesterday. It’s certainly easier to use than either the East West stuff or some of the newer voice synth products (I struggled to make sense of Emvoice when I tried it).

Cantai is well set to work nicely with Dorico if a future release of Dorico can accomodate it, and will already fit in well with the new score editor in Cubase/Nuendo 14.

(Plus of course Musescore 4.5.1 can already make direct Midi export to the Cantai web render app)

Best wishes

Does anyone know if importing an audio file is being considered for Dorico 6? I orchestrate to rhythm demos and really need this feature. I am past ready to ditch Finale. Has anyone had success doing it in Dorico 5? If so, would be grateful for tips.

It’s on the todo list for some future release (and has been for some time). Steinberg never reveals what’s planned for the next release, so as not to disappoint when things go sideways.

The workaround is to create a video with the audio and import that.

Of course, you can always import your audio as a video file

I’m always asking myself:
if there is some consensus, that Dorico 6 might come soon:
do people really think that if they post last minute wishes these have a better chance to become implemented in the few days/weeks ahead?

just wondering …

I’ve been having the very same thoughts, Michael! It seems that the wishlist might need to be for Dorico 7 at this point. :slightly_smiling_face:
