Dorico 7 Signpost Placement Change FEATURE REQUEST Sign Post

Greetings all! It’s September 2026 and I would like to ask for a Signpost Placement Change FEATURE REQUEST for Dorico 7 … Please see my screenshot below.

Granted, no one placement change will be perfect, nor make everyone happy, but, having to constantly turn them on/off (whether creating your own Keyboard Shortcut, or clicking it’s On/Off button) is just annoying,

The annoying part is that the Sign Posts are always on top of a tempo marking, and when, when you have projects that need multiple tempo markings/changes along with multi System Breaks/Manual Staff Visibility changes that live in a single Sign Post, people with small hamster-sized brains (me!!!) lose their concentration to have to keep remembering to

I know … LANDING GEAR! And JUST FLY THE PLANE!!!

Yes, shortcuts ( Show/Hide Signposts? ), yes, Right Clicks, but, a brother can dream, right?

Perhaps have the Sign Post floating to the LEFT of the staff of each score as to not get in the way of stuff that needs to be double-click (like Tempo Markers) to edit them (like Tempo Markers).

This is one of my very few pet peeves with Dorico. I think the signposts need an Avoid Collisions option.

I would add that there is a similar issue with being able to clearly visualize the Frame Chain, Frame Order, Layout Filter and Player Filter. They can easily be covered by something else when adding page overrides. It would be nice if they were on the outside of the frame, to the left or to the right in the margin and have a much darker background color.

Thanks for your post.

I thought there was a way to change the opacity of signposts, but I must be mistaken since I cannot find the setting.

Shift + Alt/Opt click is not working. Chords, System Texts AND Tempi sit behind my Sign Posts in every project. It is MADDENING!

Here is a Screenshot …

When you’re doing a Chant project (one note-headless note to accommodate a word in different tempo :::creating natural singing in Cantai), you’ll need to a have a lot of tempi put in, and this is just too much!

Both the System Track and Sign Post are poorly implemented in this case. Yes, I can Option + T to toggle the System Track, or go to Engrave Mode and move the Tempo Marker, move the Chord, and move the … Or, Dorico can implement:

Sign Posts show in margins of the pages, or give Sign Post a very important Shortcut (to toggle on/off … any “non-Twister” suggestions ?)

For the System Track, Option + T is easy enough, but, a new update/feature would be to keep it transparent, but, if any item (Chord, Tempo, etc) gets moved behind it, make it like automatic “disappear” like a Mac’s Dock, or an automatic “move aside” or something, but, still obviously keep the functionality of being able to select a Bar/Measure via the System Track by clicking an area where there is no text/chord/tempo markers, etc., and still be able to click the TICK BOX to delete that measure (where you would be erasing those text/chord/tempo markers anyway.).

To be clear, Sign Posts and System Tracks are an AMAZING FEATURE, and I can only imagine that change the code that changes their functionality is like removing an entire engine to get to a water pump, so, I know its a big ask/wish, but any improvement added functionality would be great!

FYI, when did DOUBLE CLICKING stop working when trying to edit lyrics, tempo markers, system texts, and Sign Posts?!?!?! Their respective pop ups/editors used to come up, now they rarely work!

I have no issues with double clicking to enter various things. So, not sure why you would have intermittent issues with that. Same with Shift-Opt/Alt-click.

My primary issue is with overlapping items in Write mode, it can be challenging to discern everything that is “in” that particular spot. In other words, it’d a little difficult visually especially as I get older. A lot of software manufacturers fail to understand the natural changes in vision as we age. Yet, we older folks are often a substantial portion of the user base.

Why not just hide the system break signposts (view>signposts… and deselect system breaks)? You can keep other signposts visible if you want

I agree in the sense that I wouldn’t need to see signposts while I was entering lots of tempo changes; so I’d turn them off during that stage of composition.

(Somewhere I heard “enter the music first; then format.”) :smirk:

English is not my first language so I really do not know/understand what “non-Twister suggestion” mean. So this comment may not be what you are looking for. Anyway…
I have set the F5 key (Windows) to toggle signpost visibility. I think adding/changing a Key-command, would be a easy solution for what you want.

@rafaelv

OT: Twister is a family game played on a mat placed on the floor with rows of colored dots on it. One spins a spinner that lands on a color and one must then place a foot or a hand on a dot of that color.

With multiple individuals playing in turns, one can imagine that available dots become less and less available and convenient as the game proceeds and players end up contorted around each other until a player cannot reach an appropriately colored dot or cannot keep from falling.

Daniel is using that as a metaphor (valid or not) for his impression of how inconvenient some aspects of Dorico are for him.

@Derrek
I appreciate that you took the time to explain that to me.
Thank you.

Adding to what @Derrek has described, here is a short YouTube video:

If I played that today, the orthopedists and neurosurgeons would be fighting to see who gets to operate first! There was a time, many moons ago, when I could flex better than most and win this game…

A complicated “Keyboard Shortcut” can often refer to your hands and fingers having to make awkward movements like the “Twister” the game …

 Yup, I played that game many pounds/follicles ago!

LOL I was not using Twister as a metaphor for Dorico, I was using it as a metaphor for awkward Keyboard Shortcuts, particularly a Keyboard Shortcut that would need to be created to avoid/collide with the Shortcuts that already might be used in Dorico, MacOS, etc., hence, TWISTER.

I originally recorded on a Roland VS1880 where the game “Twister” was often used on the Roland forums to explain how to do some of the basic tasks in the Roland buttons; hold this button down with the pinky in your left hand, this other with the right thumb, while hitting the Record button, and so forth and so on.

Gen X? That was late Boomer material! (“conveying light hearted innocent humor”) :joy:

Maybe we should be organising a Dorico Twister night?
