Dorico audio stuttering, UI freezing, and app crashing with microtonal scores

I’ve been working in both 12EDO and just intonation (JI) scores in Dorico and find severe performance differences.

Audio stuttering
While I occasionally get audio stuttering in both tonality systems (and is fixed by switching back and forth between ASIO drivers), my JI tonality system seems to kickstart it. I’ve sought solutions for this on the forum, and this seems to be the only one that regularly works. Obnoxious, but it works.

UI freezing and app crashing
Every time I work for a while in a JI score, it inevitably either 1) fully crashes or 2) continues playback or note input while the UI freezes completely. I can navigate between notes with the arrow keys and hear them, but the visual selector does not move. During playback, it continues to play but the cursor remains stationary.

Possible culprit for crashes – the tonality system?
I had a suspicion that my tonality system is causing the ruckus. Given that ratio input isn’t available, I did what I heard was recommended: create a wildly divided octave and use a million custom accidentals. I’m currently using 12000EDO and have a couple dozen accidentals.

Presuming this might be demanding on the program, I looked around at Dorico’s own suggestions. In an official Dorico YouTube video on microtonality, they suggested using PlainSound’s Dorico resources. However, this resource is also 12000EDO and has many, many more accidentals. The app crashes much more quickly with this system.

I can provide crash logs if necessary.

Yes they will need the diagnostic file, you can upload it here as a .zip, someone from the team will be able to help and contact you.

Yes, arco is right, please do from the Dorico menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report which creates a zip file on your desktop. Besides the log files and other stuff also the most recent crash files shall be contained in there. So please post here such diagnostic file. Thanks

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (744.6 KB)

This was made after a UI freeze, about 15min into a session. I could seemingly still interact with the file (e.g., I could hear selected notes, and after scrolling and attempting to select something, I could hear it select a new instrument).

Hi @henry.fording , thanks for the diagnostics.
Unfortunately there are no crash or freeze files contained and also the log files don’t tell me any wrong doing, especially from an audio engine point of view.
Maybe @dspreadbury could take a look from Dorico’s point of view.

I suspected this would be the case. The UI freezes still seem to allow me to interact with the file, and are sidestepped by closing the file and re-opening. Once I experience another hard crash, I’ll respond with the diagnostic again.
