I’ve been working in both 12EDO and just intonation (JI) scores in Dorico and find severe performance differences.
Audio stuttering
While I occasionally get audio stuttering in both tonality systems (and is fixed by switching back and forth between ASIO drivers), my JI tonality system seems to kickstart it. I’ve sought solutions for this on the forum, and this seems to be the only one that regularly works. Obnoxious, but it works.
UI freezing and app crashing
Every time I work for a while in a JI score, it inevitably either 1) fully crashes or 2) continues playback or note input while the UI freezes completely. I can navigate between notes with the arrow keys and hear them, but the visual selector does not move. During playback, it continues to play but the cursor remains stationary.
Possible culprit for crashes – the tonality system?
I had a suspicion that my tonality system is causing the ruckus. Given that ratio input isn’t available, I did what I heard was recommended: create a wildly divided octave and use a million custom accidentals. I’m currently using 12000EDO and have a couple dozen accidentals.
Presuming this might be demanding on the program, I looked around at Dorico’s own suggestions. In an official Dorico YouTube video on microtonality, they suggested using PlainSound’s Dorico resources. However, this resource is also 12000EDO and has many, many more accidentals. The app crashes much more quickly with this system.
I can provide crash logs if necessary.
