Can you send me that non-sounding Dorico project?
If critical, you could even strip it down to a handful of bars.
And send to u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de
Thanks

Here it is.
Hi Cees, thanks. The interesting point with it is, that the only thing which prevents sound to come out from your project is, HALion Sonic does not load the appropriate sound files. HALion Sonic does get loaded and wired up correctly, but it is mute because no sound files are loaded.
Furthermore, interesting point, when I apply a playback template then it does make noise. I’ve saved a version and attached here. I’m curious how that project behaves with you…

I hear no sound.
In the left panel I see "!!Halion!!
Thats interesting. I’m on the run and come back ASAP…
Hi @Cees, I’ve had a second look at your diagnostics and it appears that you still just have HALion Sonic SE installed (that’s from the Dorico 3.5 times)
In the meantime, HALion Sonic SE got replaced by the new HALion Sonic 7 as the default player. In order to get that HALion Sonic 7, go to the Steinberg Download Assistant and in the Dorico 5 section download and install the second item. that is the HALion Sonic version 7.
Once you did that , I think it will be resonable to assume that it will work for you from that point onwards.
If not, then there is something else to read and follow, namely this article
Ye , it works.
Thanks vry much, i am happy.
Cees
One last question @Cees : Did solely the HALion Sonic 7 download do the job for you, or did you also have to go through the mentioned article?
Hello Ulf, I have not read the article.
But Halion Sonic SE uninstalls and another Halion Sonic 7 re-downloaded.
Okay, thanks for clarification @Cees .
Hello Ulf,
Again, I get the message: “Dorico cannot connect to the audio engine. The application will now quit.” Very annoying.
I thought that a while ago my MIDI keyboard had no connection to MuseScore. Lately, it does. Could that perhaps be the issue?
I hope there is a solution because it is difficult to work in Dorico like this.
Regards,
Cees
It has something to do with wake lock, and something has a connection to the VST engine, but this connection sometimes is not broken when the Mac goes into deep sleep. So now a new session key is confronted with the old still-active one. Das is verboten. In the activity manager try force quitting the VST thing, sometimes it works. Usually quitting Dorico and coming back in will work, or for one hundred percent success, quitting all your audio apps and re-launching the apps (not rebooting) will get you going. I have read elsewhere that a USB2 device such as a MIDI controller can trigger this condition.
I quit all audio apps before I close the shop for the night.
Just a few additions. Dorico reacts differently. Sometimes everything works. Other times I hear sound but the midi keyboard doesn’t work.
Greeting
Cees
Hi @Cees,
do you have the latest update to Dorico 5.1.81 installed and could you please send a new diagnostic report? Thanks
Dodgy USB connectors or cables can cause a lot of trouble but not the “cannot connect to audio engine” issue. Or at least not that I could think of.
Hello Ulf,
Yes, I do indeed have the latest update from Dorico. It’s strange. When I make “create new” e.g. “leadsheet” I hear sound when I use the midi keyboard, but the note input does not respond. Yesterday he did. So it varies. Then I open another song and then I don’t hear any sound when using midi keyboard. Strange. With my focus rite I see that the midi does respond there.
Here is a new diagnostic.
Thank you very much
Cees
The Diagnostic is too big. Can I send ik in another way?
You can email it to Ulf directly via u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de.
I did. Thanks
Quick update: I turned out that the WinRT option in the preferences was ticked with Cees and that caused the problem. Unticking that and now he can input notes via MIDI keyboard.
Hello Ulf, I also sometimes receive the “Dorico cannot connect to the audio engine” and then it doesn’t open. In general, however, it opens and then, when I try to activate play back, it crashes. I can, however, do everything normally within the app, it’s only when I try playback that it crashes. This happens regardless of which project I try to open. I’m using Windows. I have checked and I have HALion 7. I’ve looked and I cannot find the folder “AppData\Local\Temp\Dorico\cachedFileDataProvider” anywhere on my pc. I’m trying to upload the Diagnostic Report.
Since I can’t upload it I am sending it by email. Thanks!
