Cantai’s v3.0.2 release today seems to have addressed a number of issues. One might want to install it and give previously rendered works a try with the new processing. I’ve found several things that are working much better.
I’m running the latest versions of Dorico Pro and Cantai on Windows 11, and unfortunately, there’s been no improvement in how projects close. All four Cantai (SATB) windows stay open, as does the mixer. Dorico’s main window disappears, but any attempt to interact with what remains (the mixer) causes Dorico to crash (or confirms it already has). Task Manager shows that VSTAudioEngine (hosting the four Cantai instances) is “Not Responding.”
In terms of a successful project shutdown, these are the steps that seem to work: save, close mixer or other Dorico windows, close Cantai windows.
I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to completely uninstall and sweep up all remnants of the previous Cantai version before installing 3.0.2. Beyond the closing issue, Cantai’s performance has improved noticeably: it now utilizes my RTX 3070 GPU for much faster rendering, along with numerous other audio and quality-of-life enhancements. In the end, 3.0.2 is a mixed bag of great and not-so-good!
Is this any different than the 3.02 Beta? (If so, I would think that they would update the version number!) ![]()

One would expect the release to be higher than the beta but so far it appears to be the beta plus additional improvements. I am experiencing higher quality sound and better dynamics. My understanding of the beta was that it was just addressing GPU processing.
Who knows anything for certain with Cantai? Much of this product has been smoke and mirrors in my opinion so I’ve just decided to go with the flow. I keep every version of the installer (so far) so that I can go backwards if the need arises. It does get “tired” when the cache exceeds 8G as far as I can tell resulting in sloppy pitches. Deleting the cache for all (now there are delete options for the cache) seems to fix the issue.
Not necessarily. In software, 3.0.2-beta is generally just a prerelease version of 3.0.2, not a precursor to 3.0.3. So you might see 3.0.2-b1, 3.0.2-b2, and then the released 3.0.2 – and each of those might include some changes.
There’s often a fourth component to the version number, a build number, that does get incremented each time but that is usually only relevant for people like devs and beta testers. For example, Dorico has:

And Windows has:

The latest version included improvement keeping voices in sync where they would falter rhythmically in former versions. ![]()
Cantai Support got in touch and advised me to update to the new version 3.0.2. I’d already done that, but it didn’t solve the problem. So I uninstalled Cantai completely, restarted the computer, and then reinstalled Cantai 3.0.2. The result: Dorico still won’t close in the usual way.
This problem needs to be sorted out.
However, the playback quality has improved.
This reflects my observations exactly. And yes, this NEEDS to be sorted out! ![]()
Hi folks,
but we have here at least 2 different issues:
- ) Dorico not closing because it waits for an answer from a VSTAudioEngine that got crashed by the Cantai plug-in. This is something that we at Steinberg cannot sort.
- ) Dorico is not closing because it waits for an answer from a VSTAudioEngine that is not responding. For thiscase, it still needs to be evaluated what exactly is going on and who has to fix it.
Can someone with the 2nd issue provide me with mini dumps (Win) or process samples (Mac) of both, Dorico and VSTAudioEngine?
@Reinhard32 Can you share this information from Ulf via reply email with Cantai Support so it is associated with your ticket? That would help them to know to investigate more thoroughly on their end. Thanks!
@kasky1 Thanks for your suggestion. I have forwarded this to the Cantai support.
Edit:
Another observation: if I try to change the current Cantai playback template to ‘Silent’ or ‘Noteperformer’, Dorico freezes as well.
Here’s a quick update: Cantai has identified the problem and has already updated the programme code. It is now going through the approval process.
The error occurred consistently whenever more than two singers were used in Cantai. Another user had the same problem.
It is not yet known when the fixed version of the programme will be released.
did you update to 3.1.0? I’ve found this version much more stable than 3.0.2 where the audio engine also froze fairly frequently.
Am I correct that Cantai 3.1.0 is a Mac-only upgrade?
Yes, and for Windows as well. And a version for Intel based Mac’s.![]()
Thank you for letting me know about the new version 3.1.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t yet solved the problem with Dorico freezing.
Yes, as Reinhard said above, the update is for Windows as well as Macs.
A quick update: Cantai has released a new version, 3.1.1. After installation, Dorico can be closed again without any problems.
The problem now appears to have been resolved.
That’s true for closing a project. However, changing the playback template from a Cantai one to another hangs Dorico. I have to delete each of the Cantai VST slots before applying a new template. Only then can I apply a new one. I like to go back to NP or HSO/Iconica Sketch after rendering Cantai audio. Makes it much quicker to open and edit a project if I don’t have to wait for Cantai to load every time
