I think Dorico should not enable you to open an already opened file (creating a second window). This makes it unstable, I suppose, and potentially creates conflicts in saving. Furthermore, Dorico eventually crashes. Took me some time to find out that the crashes were due to opening an already opened file.
Anyone having the same problem? Hope this can be sorted out.
I’ve not encountered that issue. Can you share Dorico version and operating system version/info? And maybe provide a copy of the file in question with anything not fit for nor desired to share for, general knowledge removed? If we can reproduce the issue, we might just ID the solution for you.
You can open another Window in Dorico for the currently open document, but that is not the same as opening the same file twice, which shouldn’t be able to happen.
Many people use two windows, as you can have different modes in each one, or different layouts, etc.
In any case, opening another window for the current document shouldn’t cause a crash.
Please provide more details: OS platform and version; are you opening this file from a Cloud storage, external disk, etc.
You can create a Diagnostic Report from the Help menu, which you can then upload here for the developers to look at.
Dorico explicitly disallows opening the same project more than once. If you’re able to persuade it to do it, please let me know the steps, so we can tighten them up.
I’ve often worked with two different documents at the same time with no issues, and have occasionally misclicked and tried to open the same document from the Hub; Dorico has always just taken me to the already opened document.
BTW, I just tried again and it manifests with any file. Open the file, and then reopen it from the Open Recent menu. You get a new ‘- 2’ window. It is also possible to do it via the project hub window (just tried).
I can reproduce the opening of a second copy. (Latest Dorico, Mac OS Tahoe 26.7.) Picking the currently open file from “Recent files” opens a second copy. (I can tell it’s a second copy and not just a new window, because I get the “activate playback?” question that you get when you open a second project.)
My steps to do it was simply:
Open Dorico.
Open a project
Pick the same project from “recent files”.
I did not try to do anything to provoke a crash. (I immediately closed Dorico normally without issues.)
Fascinating, I have the version of Dorico but MacOS Golden Gate (27) and it will not open a second file in the manner you prescribe. Perhaps this is an OS issue and not a Dorico issue…just a thought.
