Dorico crashing because of VSTaudio engine

Hello,

I am having problems since Dorico 5.1. update and writing for smaller orchestra. Every time I try to save Dorico it crashes and consequently lose all my work.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? I already deinstalled Iconica Sketch but don’t believe that’s the root of the problem. Either way I am using Note Performer.

Thank you for your help in advance,
Eva

I’m quite confident, as a regular reader here, that the very first thing you should post along your first post is a diagnostic file. You can create it through the Help menu in Dorico. Hopefully, somebody very competent (Ulf?) will look into it and come back at you with useful information or questions…

Hello,

I’m having this issue too… The one comes after a few actions, and the program seems to close itself… VST audio still in the list here… Does Steinberg know about the issue ??

Hello,

I am adding two of my diagnostics reports as suggested.

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (786.2 KB)

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.8 MB)

Hi @Lostaccount_007 , thanks for the data. There are 3 freezedumps contained but they are all of size zero, that means they are useless for me.
Therefore, please do the following:

  • Download the utility Process Explorer from here
  • It’s for free, it’s tiny and does not need installation. Just unpack the zip and run it.
  • If you get into that situation again look in the process list for VSTAudioEngine (pretty much at the end of the processes list) do a right click on it and then from hte pop-up menu choose ‘Create Dump > Create mini dump’.
  • Save the dump and send me.

Hi @pyykmatt79 , please also provide a Dorico Diagnostics Report (‘Help > Create Diagnostics Report’) and attach here. You can check also yourself, if there are only dump files of zero length, then follow the advice as given above.

Thanks
Ulf

Hello,

I am sending you the minidumps here, as they were too big to post on the forum. My storage on this email is full, so I put them in a folder on another account’s drive folder (gumbek3@gmail.com)

Hi Eva,

thanks for the dump files. One of them is a crash in Groove Agent 5.1, the other one a crash in NotePerformer.
For NotePerformer I don’t know, the only advice is to get in touch with Wallander Instruments.
For the crash in Groove Agent (GA), there is already a newer version of GA available, so please get via Download assistant GA 5.2 and try that out.

Thanks
Ulf

Hello,

I updated the GA and deleted NP. The situation is still the same and now even without any other sound libraries than HALion. I updated the drive folder with 2 new mini-dumps I created after it crashed on the save…

Is it possible to reverse the update to 5.1.? I don’t remember having problems before the update, but since I switched from Sibelius only a few months ago this is the first time I am working on a bigger piece and I assume it requires more of my processor?

My processor is: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz 2.80 GHz and I have 16GB RAM. Is it possible it is to weak to handle this?

Hi @Lostaccount_007 ,
thanks for the data again. I looked at the audio engine dump and that crash is at a completely new location, but with in the audio engine. More I can not say at this moment. The Dorico dump I’m going to hand over to Daniel and his team.
Your processor is similar to what I have, I only have twice the memory, but the memory rather than the cpu could make the difference. How big are your projects, how many players, how many flows and what length?

Hello, thanks for all the help. It’s about 20 instruments and only ten bars into first flow.

Daniel had a look at the Dorico crash dump you’ve sent and it appears to him as Dorico crashing while Auto Saving and retrieving data from the audio engine.
But it is still pretty vague and not 100% clear what is happening.
Would it be possible that you sent me your project in a private message? Full confidentiality is guaranteed from my side.
And also please keep up sending me crash files should you encounter new error or crashes. Thank you
