Dorico Elements 5 "Audio Engine Process Died"

Hi,

I have a student using Dorico Elements 5 on a 2020 intel core Macbook Air and we cannot get the app to start.

It stops at “Audio Engine Process Died”

We’ve used the Steinberg Download Assistant to reinstall the latest version of Dorico Elements, and also the HALion Sonic 7.0.10 instrument. I also deleted Steinberg AUs and VSTs and reinstalled only the HALion instrument.

I see older posts about this, several a number of months old that seem to be resolved, but I’m not sure what we’re missing here.

Crash Log posted here: Loading Google Docs

The student has been trying to resolve since August and has already uninstalled and reinstalled everything.

Thanks.

I’m sorry to hear about your student’s travails, Joshua. Ideally we need to collect the crash logs of the audio engine as well as any Dorico crash logs.

Please download this zip archive:

CreateDoricoDiagnosticsReport.sh.zip (1.1 KB)

It contains a single shell script, with extension .sh. To run this shell script, unzip the archive, and drag the .sh file to the desktop.

Now run the Terminal application, which you can find via Spotlight. This will bring up a command line window. Type the following:

cd ~/Desktop

and hit Return. This will change the current directory in the Terminal to the desktop folder where you dragged the shell script. Now type:

chmod +x Create

and hit Tab, and the Terminal should fill in the rest of the path for you, so that it now says:

chmod +x CreateDoricoDiagnosticsReport.sh

so hit Return. This command makes the shell script executable, so we can run it. Now type:

./Create

(that’s a full stop or period, followed by a slash, followed by the word Create), and again hit Tab so the Terminal completes the command for you. It should now say:

./CreateDoricoDiagnosticsReport.sh

on the command line, so hit Return. Now you should find that a zip file called DoricoDiagnosticsReport.zip is created on the desktop. Attach that to a reply here, and we should be able to figure out what’s up very quickly.

Thank you Daniel!

I’ll gather and report back.

Josh

Additionally to what Daniel says, your student could already try the following:

There are the folders /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST and /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST3
Rename both of the folders temporarily to something else, e.g. VSTtemp and VST3temp.
Then reboot the machine and try starting Dorico again. Will that bring up Dorico?

If it does, that is not the solution, yet. But if it does then we are a big step further and I can give more advice.

dspreadbury, my Dorico diagnostics file is 11mb and is too large to send to you.

Hi @kscanman , welcome to the forum.
Our mailer allows up to 10 MB in one mail, so you are only slightly over. Most simple solution would be to split the diagnostics zip and then send in 2 separate mails. Next alternative would be using a file transfer service like DropBox or WeTransfer.
