DORICO FEATURE REQUEST: Option to lock a selection from being edited

As a mouse-averse individual, I might be on an island on this one, but here goes. I am very computer keyboard-heavy, and as much I am madly in love with the way Dorico handles computer keyboard input, I find that I am occasionally clicking on something inadvertently and destroying half a measure from earlier without realizing it, then I maybe forget exactly how I had it written. I would love an option to make a selection and right-click on that selection to lock all of that material for editing. I could lock each system as I go, and prevent any unpleasant surprises when I get carried away.

This could be very useful in my opinion. I do mouse entry and I do periodically end up changing something that I wish I hadn’t. So far CMD/CTRL-Z has allowed me to undo my mistake so far but being able to lock a voice on a staff while working on another would be most welcome here. I hope others will chime in to support this.

It’s not what you’re asking for, I’m aware, but have you looked at this bit in Preferences > Note Input and Editing?

Disable mouse editing. Why not?

…And there is always the “save often” technique! As a keyboard heavy user myself one can simply press the “save” hotkeys after a successful edit!

I save as a reflex after every small input or edit. I do the same in a word processor. This arose in me because back in the early 80’s the VAX 11/750 we used crashed a lot! [Nothing wrong with the VAX - it was just in a CompSci department!].

And if you have to use the mouse to select a selection to lock aren’t you back to using the mouse more than you want? I suppose you could navigate and make selection with keys but that seems very tedious to me.

Maybe you should use Lilypond (I am serous, having used and devleoped in it for more than ten years. The output is easily the equal of Dorico, it free, and heavily supported. Completely text/keyboard based.)

Also, I set my prefs to keep 99 backups and autosave every 2 minutes anyway so no matter how badly I stuff up I am always saved.

Because some of are mouse users…:slightly_smiling_face:

I’m sorry, but this setting is the first box I tell new users to uncheck…

Good for you.
