Dorico file won’t open. ‘Error opening file’

Dear all,

I’m working on a fairly big score on Dorico for iPad and apparently made the mistake to switch to another app while being in the “Read” view in Dorico. When I try to open the file now I only get the message: ‘Error opening file’. Any chance to rescue the score? It would be extremely annoying if I had to redo everything…

Best,
Lawson Lawall

Hello Lawson, welcome to the forum.
The chances to get back to your file are quite high, because iPadOS does save files automatically.
In the (Dorico) Preferences/General/Files you can define where Dorico saves your projects, either on the iPad itself or on the iCloud.
Take a look, you might have set a preference there already.
Now, when searching for your “lost” project, use the “Files” application. Look wether your
project is stored in the “Dorico” folder on your iPad. If you can’t locate it there, you might have saved the file to an iCloud location. So look, if there is another “Dorico” folder “on iCloud”.
If you find a project file, which might be your
project, you can try to open it directly.
If that does not work, remember the location, open Dorico and → “Open or Import File” and navigate to that file.
This is my procedure. If you are not familiar
with the Files App, start with opening Dorico, do the → “Open or Import File” and search for your project file directly from there.
Somehow I personally like the Files App, as one is involved with the file structure.

Hello, Thank you for your detailed response! Unfortunately none of that worked. Even within the Dorico App I can see the file, but when I open it I only get the error message. So it might be that the file itself is somehow corrupted… Are there any other ways to recover it? I didn’t find any backup files.

That’s good, you found the location of your project file. Where is it located, on the iPad itself (in the “Dorico” folder) or somewhere else?
Also, how are your preferences set, where is your default project file location?
I would - just in case - search for a file with similar name, just in case there is a duplicate somewhere.
The file with the largest file size will be the one you were working on.
You could post that project file here and someone from the developers might be able to recover parts of it.
As far as I recall, a project.dorico file is actually a zip file project.zip renamed to project.dorico
So if one changed the file extension from .dorico to .zip one would be able to unzip the file. In the resulting folder one might at least be able to find a preview.pdf of the project. This would be a possible way to recover your work.

Can you post the project here? Also, can you confirm which version of Dorico for iPad you’re currently running?

Prolog ipad 2.dorico (3.3 MB)
Here you go… I’m running the Version 6.0.20.6035

It’s in an iCloud Folder. I briefly made some edits in Dorico Pro on my Mac and dragged a copy into that folder. But that was a year ago. I’ve used that file (on my iPad) since then.
My default project file location is on the iPad.
I didn’t find any duplicates… There is an older copy but it’s named differently and that file is bigger than the current version in terms of file size.
I tried the .zip, unfortunately that didn’t work…
Thank you for your help though!

Hopefully @dspreadbury can help you save the file.

Lawault,
that’s exactly my configuration.
Still I regularly find duplicate file versions in these locations:
[On my iPad]->Dorico and [iCloud]->Dorico.
There is still hope, if you log into the web interface of www.icloud.com, go to the files area, and look for earlier versions of that file.

I’m very sorry to say that there’s no recoverable data in the project you’ve uploaded, @Lawault. I hope you’re able to find an earlier version of the project via iCloud.

Lawault, it is probably not necessary to mention that you might have a Time Machine backup, from which you could pull that file…
