Dorico for I-Pad | Cannot work on files in subfolders anymore

I‘m sorry. This might be a double post, but I didn‘t get a response in another threat - so I try to name it a little more obvious.

On Dorico for I-Pad I cannot work on files that are located in another folder than the main Dorico folder (I-Cloud). If I open a file located in a subfolder, it will automatically create a copy of the same file in the main Dorico folder.

This makes the I-Pad version almost unusable for me at the moment, because I have more than a thousand scores and I heavily rely on keeping them organised in a folder structure.

I’m wondering - is this happening only to me??? - It would be so kind if s.o. could check this for me.

I tried this:

  • Create a new „clean“ score directly in the app (piano only)
  • Share - Save as Dorico file to „Dorico/Subfolder/…“.
  • Open the file.

If I open it, it will create a copy in the main Dorico folder. Changes do not affect the opened file but only the copy of the file.

I also tried reinstalling the app without results.

Thanks for your help!

Johannes

I can confirm this also happens for me. It happens that this works well for me as it means I don’t end up with Dorico for IPad saving over my file when I don’t want it to, but I appreciate that might not be what everyone wants.

Thank you very much for checking!!! Although that‘s bad news for me…

Could s.o. from the Dorico Team respond if this is the desired behaviour??? - I‘m very sure that this wasn‘t always the case!

I imagine that other users would also want to use the App to continue working on existing files „on the road“…

Thanks a lot!

An update to the desktop version is usually followed by an update to the iPad version, to match the new features. (Apple has to approve it.)

So there may be an update soon: and you can see if it improves things.

Please don’t double post. The team read everything, but around a new release, they are very busy – both before and after.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me!

I waited for the iPad update, but unfortunately it does not completely solve the issue.

There might have been some change, as Dorico now saves the new file with a version number added to the filename.

Also I can now open some Dorico files directly at their location. Others still create a copy in the main Dorico folder.

And another step backwards: In earlier versions I remember that there was a small notification when a new file was created.

Now you don’t even realize that a new version has been created. This easily leads to having your work spread over multiple versions, having to compare them, and potentially losing work or doing the same work twice.

I use the iPad every day when working at my local music school, and I open 10–20 scores each day, sometimes making small changes here and there.

It is really frustrating that I now end up with many unnecessary copies where I cannot properly keep track of the changes.

I would greatly appreciate if s.o. from the team could respond to this. - At the moment I don’t even know if the problem I’m facing might be the new desired behavior…

I hope I don’t sound too skeptical. - I’m simply a professional who, at the moment, cannot properly use the program I normally use daily, and I don’t even know if this is going to change again.

Thanks a lot!!!

I’m experiencing a similar issue, but in my case it always copies and saves to that Dorico folder, instead of opening and saving back the original location I opened the file from (completely different folder in iCloud). The Dorico team is aware and are working on it. It appears to not be an easy fix as the updated build I tried with the fix did not solve the issue.

At the moment there is one way to avoid getting unorganised files:
Make it a habit to not leave any file/score you have done a small edit to - without a ->Share->Dorico project - back to the original location.

In other words:
Open the project
Do the edits
Share Dorico project back to original location
Exit the project

Repeat these 4 steps with your next
project.

Yes. Same for me. A copy of the file in the main Dorico folder as soon as the file in the subfolder is opened.

Thanks for this! Actually, my files had already gotten messed up quite a bit because I was using the main Dorico folder for uncategorized work or quick notes, and now I have dozens of random copies mixed in. I’ve now moved everything to another location so that I know all the files in the main Dorico folder are not needed anymore.

Thanks for your idea. This at least sounds like a possible workaround until the issue is sorted out.

Update. I tested another build and the fix worked. According to Daniel in another post this fix will be there in the next Dorico for iPad update. I’ve tried opening a file in a subfolder in the Dorico folder and so far so good. Also worked on my files from the same folder I normally work from, and no more duplications and changes are being saved to the original file.

That would be great. Thanks for letting us know! Would you mind linking the other post?

I edited my earlier post with a link to the post in another thread.

These two files should then appear separately in Dorico’s list of recently used files, right?

Well they did up until a day or so ago; seems like the issue has been “fixed”. In exactly a way I didn’t want. I hope I am misunderstanding.
