Dorico For iPad keeps crashing

Hello, I have the lastest verion of Dorico on the latest iPadOS, and for some reason, the software randomly crashes after 5 minutes of opening a file, and it erases all data since the last save. Luckily it only erased a few measures, since I just started but its annoying. It could be related to the fact that I have a MIDI controller plugged in using USB-B to USB-C

It would be nice if I could find a quick save button on iPad, because right now to save I have to exit out of the file in the top left corner and then re open the file. Is there also a way to auto-save?

Thanks,
Ellie

First of all: Dorico does have an auto-save function, that saves regularly on your harddisk by default. Off the top of my head, it’s inside the Dorico folder in your user directory.
Secondly, when you open Dorico again, immediately create a Diagnostics Report (in the Help menu), and upload it here on the forum (simply drag it into the panel where you type). It gives the developers an insight in why the crashes occur.

Edit to add: I didn’t see you’re on iPad. That complicates things a bit, but it should be possible to generate (or dig up) a Diagnostics Report somehow. I never used Dorico on iPad, so maybe someone else could advise better.

I don’t think the autosave applies to dorico for iPad. If it did, then why did I lose measures of data when it crashed? Shouldn’t it have auto-saved?

Diagnostics report:

Hi Ellie, I’m very sorry to hear about the crashes you’re experiencing on iPad. The problem is related to auto-save itself, which is why it appears to crash randomly. We’re on the tail of the problem and will have a fix as soon as possible.

Can confirm, Dorico 6 for iPad today started crashing on every auto save this morning (and not saving). Wonder what changed in the past day?

Your device will have updated Dorico to version 6.0.20, where this problem appears to have been introduced.

Now it’s happening, every 5 minutes, on my dorico-for-ipad (lifetime subscription) I’ve not been able to find any .ips files, but think it suspicious that the only files involved are: [AutoSave] files.

The problem started with:
Somewhere My Love-[AutoSave].dorico (1.3 MB)

and on checking another, I got to see the same result:

Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da-[AutoSave].dorico (1.3 MB)

Without making any changes to other scores, they seem to survive more than 5 minutes. I wonder if there’s an ‘AutoSave’ setting that I’ve inadvertently activated?

Either way, I’d be grateful for a solution.

Update, I’ve found how to create a diagnostic report (bottom of list from top right).

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (120.7 KB)

Found that my version is 6.0.20 which @dspreadbury highlighted as the possible cause for the crashes.

I believe I’ve got to the bottom of the problem now, and we’ll be submitting a new build to Apple for their approval within the next few hours. Hopefully a fix will be available within the next 24 hours or so.

Hi I just purchased the yearly subscription thinking it would fix crashing issues. If anything things go really bad. Crashes every few minutes and now wont save what I wrote. It erased all my old work when I opened it from app store again. It now won’t allow me to have 3 voices in my piano part which it did before. When I play back my part it crashes. I have to close out dorico and play it from start again. Sometimes it just shuts audio off completely and I have to reboot.
The strangest thing is I have only had it a week and the first few days it worked like a charm now it just progressively gets worse!
Please help! Love this program!!!

Oh and in addition to this tried to get dorico for my imac but it will not let me download it, have you discontinued it?

Hi @Chumpchops, and welcome to the forum!

The update to Dorico for iPad is on its way pending Apple’s review — as noted above in this thread. Hopefully, today, but keep looking for it in the App store.
As far as the download for mac, are you using the Steinberg Download Assistant? (And you need to do all the licensing/ validation as well.) Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating, but it does work! Many users are on a mac — I don’t think it will ever be discontinued!
Folks are really friendly here; it you are still having trouble, let us know how we can help.

@dspreadbury Thanks for your efforts Daniel, the crashing has stopped.

Interesting… even on my older 2018 iPad Pro the updated Dorico seems subjectively ‘snappier’.

It’s a wonderful app to have on hand, being such a close duplicate to the ‘mother program’.
