I’m considering upgrading to the paid version of Dorico for iPad, but before I do I was hoping to know which notehead presets are included in the paid version (in particularly, hoping for a scale degree option with numbers instead of shapes). As soon as I go to the notehead settings I get prompted to subscribe or pay the one-time fee, so I can’t even see what the notehead options are.
gmfraser, I have the paid iPad Dorico version, so I can check for you. Were do you see the Notehead Settings?
If I tap on the “burger” icon (top right), I see f.e. “Music Fonts”. If I tap on it, there is quite a selection of fonts, have a look:
Thank you for checking! I ended up signing up for the free trial so that I could check. It was actually the notehead style rather than the font that I was looking for. I found the notehead sets and it seems to be the same as in Dorico Elements on the desktop. I was hoping for a notehead set that uses numbers for scale degree instead of shapes, but I don’t think Dorico has that.
gmfraser, ok., can you help us? where is the menu item on the iPad to look up the notehead style or the notehead sets ? I can’t find it yet…
In your first post you also mentioned the notehead presets and the notehead settings
You can select a note and then select the secondary menu near the upper-right of the screen. It’s three dots next to an eyeball icon. From there you can scroll down and select “Notehead.” That brings up a bunch of sets of noteheads (e.g. crosses, triangular, slashes, etc.). In my case I clicked on scale degree noteheads and there are four types in that category.
I had been hoping Dorico would have scale degree noteheads where the number of the scale degree is shown, rather than just a shape corresponding to the scale degree. It seems like an easy thing to add and I’ve seen quite a few other people request it, so it’s an unfortunate omission.
The trick is to select one or more notes first, or those menu items won’t appear. And the secondary menu itself is easy to miss.
Dorico shouldn’t need to provide this (AFAIK as it is something of a niche request) since with Dorico Pro one should be able to create such a set for oneself. If one wants to do various custom things, be it custom expression maps or custom notehead sets, one really needs to invest in the full version of the program.
Perhaps someone would be willing to create such a set for you (for free or fee), but unless there is widespread demand for such a notehead set, it is probably not something at the top of the developers’ roadmap.
@gmfraser,
as a follow up to Derrek’s comment: if you don’t already use DoricoPro at your desktop computer, you can always get the Demo version and use those 60 free days to set up your custom notehead sets, and use them as “template” files on your iPad.
It’s hard for me to assess how niche of a request it is, as I’ve seen other people request it in these forums over the past few years. I did see that it is possible to create a custom set in Dorico Pro, which I don’t currently have. I might upgrade at some point. But if Dorico is already supporting various scale degree shapes (four different sets in that category), it seems like a small thing to add one that uses numbers instead of shapes.
It took me a while to find it too!
That’s a great idea! Thank you!
